So, will he take Banks and mold him or decide to trade him away? Now, Giants defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is shedding some light on how he and the team feels about Banks going forward into the 2026-27 season.

New York Giants Defensive Coordinator Dennard Wilson talks Deonte Banks

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, April 7, Wilson give Banks a lifeline, at least verbally. He went on the record as calling him “talented” and saying that the coaching staff is ready to mold him.

“He’s a talented player. He’s big. He can run,” Wilson said, according to Ryan Dunleavy of New York Sports. “He brings an element of physicality, but he’s had an up-and-down career thus far. Tae will have the opportunity to go out there and get better.”

He added, “We’re going to put things on his plate, try to make things as simple as they can be in terms of conceptual teaching — and that’s for everybody.”

Trade Talk Still Surrounds Deonte Banks in the NFL World

So, even if Wilson says they’re sticking with Banks, that doesn’t spot trade pitches by NFL analysts and experts that sent the player away. In a Monday, April 6 feature for ESPN, Bill Barnwell sends Wilson to the Saints.

In this pitch, the Giants get a 2026 8th pick, 2026 73rd pick and 2026 172nd pick, while the Saints get a 2026 5th pick and Banks. It seems almost too good to be true, right?

“The Giants could be in the mix for Love or Tate, but their ideal addition would be Styles, who should still be available at No. 8,” he states in the feature. “They traded away their 2026 third-round pick as part of the move up for Jaxson Dart a year ago, and while Love would be their long-term replacement for Saquon Barkley, getting that third-round pick back might not cost the Giants very much given their potential range of non-Love additions in Round 1.”

That’s a sweet deal, and Matt Sidney of GMen HQ agrees. In a Tuesday, April 7 piece, he says, “If we’re operating in the trust tree, this trade is an absolute no-brainer for the Giants. If Barnwell can guarantee Styles is still there at No. 8 (which he seems to believe in this multiverse of madness), then moving off Banks and adding two more picks feels like highway robbery.”

He adds that this trade has pretty much nothing to “complain about. The Giants add more picks, move off a question mark in Banks, and still land the second coming of Fred Warner.” So, it would be a dream trade for the Giants, but that’s why it’s not likely to go down.

Anne Erickson is an award-winning reporter for Heavy Sports covering the NFL, NBA and college football.
