The \u201cPay Baker\u201d chants go beyond Gerald McCoy\u2019s<\/a> house.<\/p>\n

Former Bucs QB Chris Simms, the NBC Sports Xs and Os guru, also is all about extending Mayfield\u2019s contract. Mayfield\u2019s three-year Bucs deal expires after the 2026 season.<\/p>\n

Simms made quite a case for Mayfield this morning on <\/a>PFT Live.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI kind of look and go, \u2018Man, there\u2019s not too many of them out there. And you\u2019ve got one in Tampa Bay. You got one,\u201d Simms said of Mayfield being a tough and talented quarterback. \u201cYou got a guy that\u2019s a leader, he can make big plays, he\u2019s got a great arm. And there\u2019s just very few [quarterbacks] that you can say, \u2018Hey, we got it.\u2019<\/p>\n

Simms also talked about Mayfield\u2019s toughness, injuries and the entire Bucs team\u2019s rash of injuries last season.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would think they\u2019re going to find the sweet spot [for a contract extension] here,\u201d Simms said. \u201cIt\u2019s just about what is that number \u2014 what makes sense for where Baker Mayfield is in his career.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a damn good player. He gives your team an edge. He gives your team an, \u2018oooh, the Bucs are on. It\u2019s Baker? Let me watch them.\u2019 Because Baker\u2019s going to go for it. He doesn\u2019t play the politics of the sport. He goes for it. He is trying to win. He\u2019s trying to throw lasers. And he\u2019s one of the more explosive quarterbacks in football in the pocket because of his frame of mind and his big right arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know me. I love the Bucs and I\u2019m hoping the Glazers and [Bucs GM] Jason Licht reward him.\u201d<\/p>\n

For those who don\u2019t think Simms has a good feel for the Bucs. In addition to chatting with Joe at the Phoenix airport last Tuesday (Simms was dealing with a delayed flight and Joe was at the airport early to battle security lines.) Simms was a gameday guest in the Team Glazer suite during the Bucs\u2019 epic meltdown against the Falcons on Thursday Night Football in December.<\/p>\n

And Simms shared with PFT listeners a rare glimpse into the world of Team Glazer from that night.<\/p>\n

\u201cListen, you know I was there, I was in the owners box,\u201d Simms said. \u201cAll I can tell you is that the Glazer family was intent on, \u2018Wait, let\u2019s go watch the big screen TV in our box here and let\u2019s watch the postgame press conferences.\u2019 And I didn\u2019t sit there and watch with them because I was like, \u2018That seems like it\u2019s a family business meeting over there.\u2019 I\u2019m going to say goodbye and blah, blah, blah. But they were, yeah, obviously extremely tuned in at the time and worried about kind of where the organization was going at that point in the season and why the play wasn\u2019t as good.\u201d<\/p>\n

Imagine that. Team Glazer \u2014 known for greeting players and coaches in the locker room after a win \u2014 passed on leaving their seats after a tough loss to gather, wait and watch how Todd Bowles and Baker Mayfield would react to a choke job when they could have watched it on YouTube later.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when Bowles stepped out of character and unleashed his infamous, profanity-laced tirade<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then Team Glazer watched the Bucs, on 10 days rest following the Atlanta loss, dominate time of possession at Carolina but lose while their offense imploded in the fourth quarter. And then the Bucs limped through a loss at tanking Miami a week later.<\/p>\n

Man, these Glazers are patient folks.<\/p>\n
