{"id":860550,"date":"2026-04-08T08:38:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T08:38:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/860550\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T08:38:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T08:38:37","slug":"chargers-predicted-to-add-35-5-sack-defender-to-replace-odafe-oweh","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/860550\/","title":{"rendered":"Chargers Predicted to Add 35.5 Sack Defender to Replace Odafe Oweh"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\t\t<img width=\"780\" height=\"439\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2257145178-e1775586177458.jpg\" class=\"attachment-featured-image size-featured-image wp-post-image\" alt=\"Akheem Mesidor\"   decoding=\"async\" fetchpriority=\"high\"\/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGetty\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Miami EDGE rusher Akheem Mesidor<\/p>\n<p>The Los Angeles <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chargers<\/a> failed to retain <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/odafe-oweh\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Odafe Oweh<\/a>, who was one of the team\u2019s best pass rushers of the 2025 season, and will have to look elsewhere<\/p>\n<p>Oweh <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/commanders-sign-odafe-oweh-free-agency\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> a four-year, $100 million contract with the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/washington-commanders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Washington Commanders<\/a> after his only season with the Bolts, leaving a gap in the team\u2019s pass-rushing abilities.<\/p>\n<p>LA has remained relatively quiet in bringing external free agents and has yet to bring in an EDGE rusher. With the <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/\" title=\"NFL\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"218095\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a> Draft less than three weeks away, it would be the best time for the Bolts to bring in a quality defensive lineman.<\/p>\n<p>Chargers Predicted to Take Six-Year EDGE Rusher<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5748899\" class=\"size-inline wp-image-5748899\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2257147558.jpg\" alt=\"Akheem Mesidor\" width=\"782\" height=\"440\"  \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5748899\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyThe Chargers defense could receive some big help in the 2026 season<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles Chargers third-year EDGE rusher <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/tuli-tuipulotu\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tuli Tuipulotu<\/a> was one of the best pass rushers in the 2025 season. <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/chargers-khalil-mack-returns-one-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Khalil Mack<\/a> will be on the opposite side of him in 2026, but Mack is 35 years old, and he\u2019s nearing the end of his career.<\/p>\n<p>The draft is coming up soon, leaving the prime window for the Chargers to find an immediate replacement for Odafe Oweh and a long-term replacement option for Khalil Mack.<\/p>\n<p>The Athletic released its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7172035\/2026\/04\/06\/nfl-mock-draft-2026-mendoza-raiders-three-rounds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">latest mock draft<\/a> and predicts the Bolts will select Miami EDGE rusher Akheem Mesidor with the 22nd overall pick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMesidor also comes with some injury baggage, especially for an older player. But he\u2019s going to arrive in the NFL ready to roll as a three-down edge who is terrific versus the run, while mixing power and savvy as a pass rusher. He\u2019ll compete for time on day one,\u201d Nick Baumgardner wrote for the publication.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/ncaa\/players\/akheem-mesidor\/123427\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Pro Football Focus<\/a> graded Mesidor as the third-best EDGE rusher in the country with an overall grade of 92.5, with a pass-rush grade of\u00a091.7 and a 90.5 run-defense grade.<\/p>\n<p>The EDGE rusher was tied for the third-most sacks in the country, taking down opposing quarterbacks 12.5 times in the 2025 collegiate season.<\/p>\n<p>If the Chargers were to select Akheem Mesidor, it would give first-year defensive coordinator Chris O\u2019Leary another piece for his defense and could make his life a lot easier.<\/p>\n<p>One NFL analyst <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/akheem-mesidor\/32004d45-5325-0563-1424-b241e637c932\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">compared<\/a> the Miami EDGE rusher to <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/minnesota-vikings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota Vikings<\/a> defender <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/jonathan-greenard\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Greenard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Other Priorities on the Team<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-5448661\" class=\"size-inline wp-image-5448661\" data-lazy-load=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-2171087869-e1754779719113.jpg\" alt=\"Rashawn Slater\" width=\"782\" height=\"441\"\/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-5448661\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">GettyThe Bolts offensive line remains the biggest priority<\/p>\n<p>While finding a replacement for Odafe Oweh is high on the list, the bigger worry for the Los Angeles Chargers is the interior offensive line.<\/p>\n<p>The Bolts signed <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/chargers-sign-tyler-biadasz-from-commanders-after-visit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tyler Biadasz<\/a> to a three-year deal, but still have worries on the guard spots.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/chargers-los-key-offensive-lineman-to-browns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Zion Johnson<\/a> signed with the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/cleveland-browns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> and the LA parted ways with <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/expected-to-cut-mekhi-becton\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Mehki Becton<\/a>, leaving both guard spots empty.<\/p>\n<p>Los Angeles brought in <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/chargers-add-oline-guard-cole-strange\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cole Strange<\/a>, who played under new offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel in the 2025 season, to fill in the right guard spot. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said the expectation was for <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-chargers\/chargers-jim-harbaugh-reveals-oline-strange\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Strange to be the starter<\/a> next season.<\/p>\n<p>Similar to the EDGE rusher spot, the Bolts have yet to address the guard spots for the 2026 season.
