There was almost universal praise for Baltimore Ravens<\/a> quarterback Lamar Jackson<\/a> after he showed up for the 1st day of his team\u2019s offseason workouts<\/a> on Monday \u2014 something the 2-time NFL Most Valuable Player has been loath to do in the past but is seemingly now game for under 1st year head coach Jesse Minter.<\/p>\n That doesn\u2019t mean everyone is totally sold on the \u201cNew Lamar,\u201d and Jackson caught some strays from former NFL<\/a> head coach and current Fox Sports analyst Eric Mangini.<\/p>\n \u201cI don\u2019t like it,\u201d Mangini said<\/a>. \u201cI really don\u2019t like it \u2026 OK what was wrong with the last \u2018X\u2019 amount of years? Why are we now at OTAs? Were they not important last year? Were they not important the year before<\/a>? Did you not like (former head coach) John Harbaugh<\/a>? Why is this suddenly important now? Were you not trying to win the Super Bowl?\u00a0 It\u2019s a little problematic when you haven\u2019t been there in the past \u2026 now that they\u2019ve transitioned coaching staffs, you\u2019re suddenly all in?\u201d<\/p>\n When you hear the term \u201cConsider the Source,\u201d this is what people are referring to \u2014 Mangini is truly 1 of the most hated NFL head coaches in recent memory.<\/p>\n Eric \u2018Mangenius\u2019 Mangini\u2019s Awful Coaching Career<\/p>\n Mangini was an NFL assistant for a decade before he was hired as the head coach of the New York Jets<\/a> following the 2005 season, including winning 3 Super Bowls as a defensive assistant for the New England Patriots<\/a> from 2000 to 2005.<\/p>\n In 5 seasons as the head coach of the Jets and Cleveland Browns<\/a> from 2006 to 2010, Mangini went 33-47 overall.<\/p>\n In 2009, Sports Illustrated\u2019s Joe Posnanski called Mangini the \u201cWorst Coaching Hire of All Time\u201d in a scathing article.<\/p>\n \u201cI cannot stand what Eric Mangini has done to the Browns, the team of my childhood,\u201d Posnansiki wrote. \u201cI cannot stand the lack of respect he has shown for the team\u2019s history, the Mickey Mouse game he plays with quarterbacks, the amazing knack he has for getting his players to not play hard for him or the stupid fines he hands out like he\u2019s Principal Vernon from \u2018The Breakfast Club\u2019 \u2026 I\u2019m actually starting to believe that I\u2019m right. I\u2019m actually starting to believe that Mangini really was the worst head coach hire in 25 years.\u201d<\/p>\n True Role in NFL History: Spygate Whistleblower<\/p>\n Even for how awful Mangini was as a head coach, that pales in comparison to what he\u2019s actually going to be known for in the history books \u2014 as the whistleblower who blew the top off the \u201cSpygate\u201d scandal for the Patriots.<\/p>\n In his penultimate season with the Jets in 2007 \u2014 in which his team went 4-12 \u2014 Mangini complained early in the season that his former team and his former boss, head coach Bill Belichick, had illegally filmed his team\u2019s defensive play calls.<\/p>\n While the Patriots would eventually be fined $250,000 and docked a 1st round draft pick, Mangini got labeled as a snitch. It\u2019s a title he\u2019s never been able to shake off.<\/p>\n Mangini has expressed his regret for turning the Patriots in over the years.<\/p>\n \u201cIf there is a decision I could take back, it\u2019s easily that decision,\u201d Mangini told Pro Football Talk in 2012<\/a>. \u201cNever in a million years would I have wanted it to go this way. It\u2019s disappointing whenever it comes up. It\u2019s regret, it\u2019s disappointment, it\u2019s all of those things. Because I know what it took to win those Super Bowls and I have so much respect for the people that were involved there.
