San Francisco 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk<\/p>\n

Just when the end seemed to be in sight to the dramatic, season-long saga between the San Francisco 49ers<\/a> and wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk<\/a>, things got more complicated.<\/p>\n

ESPN\u2019s Nick Wagoner reported on the day free agency started back in March, that a divorce was expected in the coming days.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith the new league year set to begin today, the #49ers plan to release WR Brandon Aiyuk,\u201d Wagoner reported<\/a>. \u201cCould happen as soon as today, but certainly soon. \u2026 SF is expected to use post June 1 designation, which is why they had to wait until new league year begins.\u201d<\/p>\n

But multiple reports indicate the 49ers now plan to hold onto Aiyuk as long as possible in hopes of facilitating a trade instead of losing him for nothing.<\/p>\n

Tampering May Be Going on Behind 49ers\u2019 Backs\"San<\/p>\n

The Washington Commanders<\/a> have been the betting favorite to land Aiyuk if he\u2019s released or traded, and The Athletic\u2019s Matt Barrows recently planted a small seed of doubt about whether or not the team is tampering with the All-Pro wideout.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think \u2014 it\u2019s just my suspicion \u2014 that they feel like the Commanders are angling for Brandon Aiyuk, and you understand why,\u201d Barrows stated<\/a>. \u201cAiyuk wanted to be traded to the Commanders during their contract dispute. He is good friends with Jayden Daniels<\/a> and Jayden Daniels has been communicating with Brandon Aiyuk throughout this whole weird \u2014 I call it \u2018fade-pattern\u2019 that he has run.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not technically tampering \u2014 I don\u2019t think \u2014 if two buddies are texting each other, but it\u2019s rubbing the 49ers the wrong way that he seems earmarked to go to this other team in this conference.\u201d<\/p>\n

While it\u2019s unlikely the NFL<\/a> will open a tampering investigation in this satiation because of Aiyuk and Daniels\u2019 friendship, if it did, it could be costly.<\/p>\n

The league has typically fined organizations anywhere from $25,000 up to $250,000 and taken away draft picks from teams found to have tampered with players.<\/p>\n

49ers Are Putting Pressure on Commanders\"Washington<\/p>\n

It\u2019s no secret Washington is where Aiyuk wants to end up.<\/p>\n

He and Daniels were teammates at Arizona State, and when the 49ers were entertaining trade offers for him two years ago, Aiyuk made it known he wanted to play with his former QB.<\/p>\n

The bad news for Washington is that San Francisco knows this, and by not releasing Aiyuk, the 49ers are sending the message that acquiring him will cost them something \u2014 and if they don\u2019t want to fork over a draft pick, another team might.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe longer (Aiyuk) is held hostage \u2014 I think it puts pressure on the Commanders,\u201d Barrows continued. \u201cIf the Commanders are, in fact, counting on or thinking about having Brandon Aiyuk as part of their wide receiving core \u2014 and they do need to add another receiver in Washington \u2014 the longer you hold him, the more nervous I think the Commanders get.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey want him in the building, they want to see his knee, for example. They want that to happen sooner rather than later and if the 49ers are holding on to him, maybe that is an impetus to get a deal done.\u201d<\/p>\n
