{"id":861072,"date":"2026-04-08T14:59:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T14:59:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/861072\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T14:59:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T14:59:20","slug":"former-texas-longhorns-dl-steve-mcmichael-diagnosed-with-cte-after-battle-with-als","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/861072\/","title":{"rendered":"Former Texas Longhorns DL Steve McMichael Diagnosed With CTE After Battle With ALS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5p\">Former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/college\/texas\/football\/texas-longhorns-legend-steve-mcmichael-named-to-2024-hall-of-fame-class\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Texas Longhorns<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/bears\/onsi\/news\/steve-mcmichael-cte-als-medical-condition-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Chicago Bears defensive lineman Steve &#8216;Mongo&#8217; McMichael<\/a> passed away in April of 2025 at the age of 67 after a long battle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, otherwise known as ALS, or Lou Gehrig&#8217;s disease.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5s\">Following his death, the Concussion &amp; CTE Foundation announced that McMichael was posthumously diagnosed with stage three chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, following a Boston University study of his brain.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"5v\">There are four stages of CTE, which is caused by caused by repeated head injuries. The disease, which worsens over time, causes death of nerve cells, or degeneration of the brain. It can only be diagnosed after death. <\/p>\n<p>Doctors confirm Steve McMichael suffered from CTE after Study<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01knpr3cv40k4h0evjcs.jpg\" alt=\"Chicago Bear Steve McMichael and his wife, Misty, unveil his bust at their Chicago home with former teammates.\" title=\"Chicago Bear Steve McMichael and his wife, Misty, unveil his bust at their Chicago home with former teammates.\" width=\"6837\" height=\"4558\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"68\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Chicago Bear Steve McMichael and his wife, Misty, unveil his bust at their Chicago home with former teammates during a video unveiling at the Pro Football Hall of Fame | Kevin Whitlock \/ Massillon Independent \/ USA TODAY NETWORK<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-5\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6c\">Dr. Ann McKee, director of the Boston University CTE Center and chief of neuropathology for the VA Boston Healthcare System, confirmed the diagnosis, as well as a potential link to ALS from CTE of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/athletic\/7178040\/2026\/04\/07\/bears-steve-mcmichael-cte-diagnosed\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">McMichael, to The Athletic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6f\">\u201cThere is strong evidence linking repetitive brain trauma and ALS,\u201d McKee said. \u201cIn our CTE brain bank, about six percent of individuals with CTE also have ALS.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6i\">There are also several other cases of former NFL players being diagnosed with ALS, who were found to have also suffered from CTE. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6l\">Those players include Broncos defensive end Pete Duranko, Lions and Vikings linebacker Wally Hilgenberg, 49ers linebacker Eric Scoggins, Raiders running back Steve Smith, Raiders offensive lineman Mickey Marvin, and Eagles fullback Kevin Turner.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6o\">According to the Athletic, NFL players are &#8220;over four times more likely to develop ALS than the general male population.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">Following the findings of the study from Boston University, McMichael&#8217;s wife, Misty, released a statement, and revealed that she has donated her late husband&#8217;s brain to help continue to the research into the link between the two conditions. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">\u201cBy sharing Steve\u2019s diagnosis, we want to raise awareness of the clear connection between CTE and ALS,\u201d McMichael&#8217;s wife, Misty, said. \u201cToo many NFL players are developing ALS during life and diagnosed with CTE after death. I donated Steve\u2019s brain to inspire new research into the link between them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6x\">A Houston, TX, native, McMichael was not just a star at the NFL level. He was also an icon at the University of Texas, where he was named a unanimous All-American, and was a three-time All-Southwest Conference performer, twice being named first-team all-conference. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">He was named the MVP of the Hula Bowl, as well as the team MVP in 1979, and was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor that same year.
