Is it landing a future rookie franchise quarterback? Is it securing a star wide receiver? Perhaps it’s selecting a shutdown corner who can set up the struggling secondary. For Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine, the Los Angeles Rams’ perfect first-round of the 2026 NFL Draft avoids all those positions.

He prognosticates that an offensive tackle, Francis Mauigoa, would be the dream scenario for the team. But to be brutally honest, that would be more likely to become a nightmare.

Los Angeles does not wait until a player retires to start the training process. Well, at least not with offensive linemen. That succession plan began in 2023 when the team selected Georgia offensive tackle Warren McClendon Jr. late on Day 3. So adding a rookie offensive tackle to sit on the bench seems overly redundant.

Francis Mauigoa is a formidable force on the offensive line and certainly deserves an early selection from the draft. He even deserves to start at offensive tackle in 2026. But that will never happen in Los Angeles.

Rams should aim for Day 1 playmakers for a true dream scenario

There is something to be said about drafting a talented offensive tackle. But selecting one in Round 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft is akin to going grocery shopping and spending the money feeding friends at a fast-food burger joint. There are simply better ways to invest this year.

Right now, the team must regroup around wide receivers. Davante Adams was mentioned in trade talks, despite leading the team in scoring via receiving touchdowns. Puka Nacua is battling addiction. While everything could work out in LA’s favor,f that’s hoping for all dominoes to fall the right way.

To that end, the Horns only boast veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford and backup Stetson Bennett on the roster right now, and both are on the final year of their respective contracts. An additional quarterback is more than wise; it’s necessary.

Imagine if the team selects Mauigoa, and then one of the offensive weapons remaining on the board smashes expectations? Fans would be haunted by what might have been.

Yes, Francis Mauigoa would be a solid investment. But for a Los Angeles team actively seeking the Lombardi Trophy in 2026, he is a luxury general manager Les Snead simply cannot afford.

As always, thanks for reading.

What makes a perfect way to start the 2026 NFL Draft?
