The season may not have ended how the Houston Texans<\/a> hoped, but the franchise is keeping its young stars comfortable with major extension decisions on the horizon.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that the Texans exercised the fifth-year options on both quarterback CJ Stroud and edge rusher Will Anderson. Both players were taken back-to-back in the 2023 NFL<\/a> Draft, No. 2 and No. 3 overall, respectively. While the options won’t take effect this season, the pair will receive handsome paydays at the end of their contracts in 2027.<\/p>\n

Stroud’s option will pay him $25.904 million in 2027, while Anderson will receive $21.512 million. Anderson was a sure thing to be picked up after becoming one of the most dominant pass rushers in the NFL last season with 12 sacks. However, Stroud’s future with Houston was in question, and still could be, after an awful showing in the postseason.<\/p>\n

The Texans are still hoping Stroud can recapture the brilliance of his rookie season when he won Rookie of the Year after tossing 23 touchdowns and five interceptions, leading the Texans to the playoffs. Since then, Stroud’s numbers have gotten worse each season. In 2025, he threw for 3,041 yards with 19 touchdowns and eight interceptions.<\/p>\n

The playoffs only put Stroud’s struggles on a bigger display. The Texans did win on the road in the wild-card round against the Steelers, but it was the defense that put on a show. The Texans later fell to the Patriots in the divisional round. Stroud was awful in both showings, combining to throw for just 462 yards with two touchdowns and five interceptions.<\/p>\n

After the dreadful outings, many fans questioned whether or not Stroud was the future in Houston. Many called for backup quarterback Davis Mills to replace Stroud in the playoffs, and some wondered if the Texans should pick up his fifth-year option or give him an extension, knowing the hefty price tag.<\/p>\n

While picking up Stroud’s option does mean he will likely be in Houston for the next two seasons, it doesn’t change how important the 2026 campaign will be.
