Coming off of a 13-4 regular season, the Jaguars saw their Super Bowl hopes dashed in the wild card playoffs, taking them back to the drawing board heading into the offseason. Entering 2026 with high expectations, the Jaguars and second year head coach, Liam Coen, are ready to prove that last year was no fluke.

But if the Jaguars want to see more success this fall, it all starts at quarterback. Led by sixth year starter, Trevor Lawrence, the Jaguars are anxious to see what Lawrence can do in year two in Coen’s scheme and if he can take that next step forward. Putting together one of his best seasons since joining the NFL, Coen is excited to see Lawrence’s growth this season and commented on his endless potential.

Coen on Lawrence’s Growth

Since joining the league in 2021, Lawrence has had multiple head coaches and staffs, and despite some inconsistencies and injury issues, he has played relatively well overall. But in 2025, Lawrence showed why he is a former No. 1 overall pick, finishing fifth in the MVP voting and enjoying a bounce back campaign that has the Jaguars organization comfortable with him as the future. In a recent interview SiriusXM, Coen commented on Lawrence’s future– saying that he sees the former Clemson superstar reaching new heights.

“Look, four new systems, multiple different head coach situations, OCs, whatever it is. Go throughout the season, and you find out, I mean, doesn’t miss a single practice, doesn’t miss a single throw in practice, played the whole season,” Coen said. “Obviously, MVP finalist, Comeback Player of the Year finalist, did some great things. There is so much room to continue to improve.”

Finishing the ’25 campaign with 4,007 yards, 29 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, Lawrence and the Jaguars got off to a slow start but after a week eight bye week, he and the team found their stride, winning nine out of their last 10 games to secure their third ever AFC South title.

Lawrence’s Fit in Coen’s System

Early on in his career, Lawrence dealt with multiple scheme and personnel changes. Starting with Urban Meyer in 2021, Meyer’s firing midseason led to Darrell Bevel taking over as the interim coach before Doug Pederson was hired in 2022. Lawrence and Pederson were together for three seasons, but their time together was inconsistent– one playoff appearance between 2022-24. But under Coen, a younger and more new-school coach, Lawrence has been able to play more like himself, leading to better results. Entering year two, Coen is excited to see Lawrence continue to battle and play more loose the more comfortable he gets in his system.

“I think that’s what we’re excited about attacking, but when you start with A) humility and B) toughness, mentally and physically, I think you can do a lot with a quarterback,” Coen said. “We spent a lot of time in San Francisco at the Super Bowl going through that week, and I got to see a different side of him, hang out with him in a different lens, and I’m really excited about working with Trevor again this year.”

Dylan Grausz A lifelong sports fan, Dylan channels his passion for sports into being a journalist, where his primary goal is to provide readers with content that they love to read.
