This unfortunately has been a running trend for the Steelers ever since Ben Roethlisberger retired several seasons ago. Aaron Rodgers was the recent solution for the 2025 season, and he led Pittsburgh to a 10-7 record while helping the team win the AFC North division. However, after the playoff drought continued, Mike Tomlin stepped away, and now Mike McCarthy is at the helm.

Matthew Emmons / Imagn Images

Steelers’ Mike McCarthy and former head coach Mike Tomlin meet ahead of Super Bowl XLV.

At first, it seemed like there was no chance Rodgers would return in 2026 without Tomlin, but McCarthy’s hiring quickly connected those dots. McCarthy and Rodgers previously won a Super Bowl together and spent 13 seasons working alongside each other in Green Bay, building a strong professional relationship. That shared history has led many to believe Rodgers could be more open to continuing his career in Pittsburgh under McCarthy’s leadership, especially given their past success and familiarity with one another’s systems.

Even so, many around the league feel like Rodgers is taking too long to make a decision once again. Former Steelers quarterback Charlie Batch has even argued that money could be the primary issue holding things up. On Wednesday, Steelers insider Gerry Dulac provided clarity on those rumors, helping shed light on what may truly be influencing Rodgers’ timeline and the Steelers’ quarterback situation moving forward.

“I have been told by the people who matter that it is not about money,” Dulac said.

While Dulac’s comments were relatively short, the main takeaway for Steelers fans to understand is that the people who matter have made it clear behind the scenes that money is not the issue. This raises the question of why Batch is so confident and even doubling down on the idea that money is the problem. Batch has been around the NFL for nearly three decades. He was pretty fired up and even challenged Adam Schefter, who disagreed with him that money was the hold-up involving Rodgers. Many have essentially laughed at those claims and suggested he does not know what he is talking about. Now, it seems Dulac is echoing those same sentiments with his answer, pointing to “the people who matter.”

Karl Roser / Pittsburgh Steelers

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) during a regular season game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Minnesota Vikings, Sunday, Sept. 28, 2025 in Dublin, Ireland.

In the end, the situation surrounding Rodgers and the Steelers remains fluid, but the messaging coming from credible insiders appears to be consistent. While speculation continues to swirl in public conversations, the organization seems aligned behind the scenes on what is and is not influencing Rodgers’ decision.

If money truly is not the driving factor, then the conversation shifts toward fit, timing, and Rodgers’ comfort level within the new leadership structure under McCarthy. Of course, the fact he will be turning 43 years old in that 2026 season also plays a factor. If Rodgers does not come back, the organization is prepared to move onward with Mason Rudolph and Will Howard.

Steelers Are Operating With Intention And Patience

For Steelers fans, the uncertainty is nothing new, but it does reinforce just how pivotal the quarterback position remains to the team’s long-term direction. With McCarthy now in place and his shared history with Rodgers, the possibility of a reunion carries more weight than it initially seemed to when Tomlin stepped away. Still, until Rodgers makes a definitive decision, questions will persist and narratives will continue to develop.

Matt Freed / Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

Steelers’ new head coach Mike McCarthy smiles as he addresses the media during his introductory press conference that took place at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA.

What is clear is that the Steelers are operating with intention and patience, trusting that the situation will resolve in due time. Whether Rodgers ultimately returns or the team pivots in another direction, the next chapter at quarterback will be one of the most closely watched storylines in the NFL.

Please feel free to share your Steelers takes and thoughts with me on X (@anthonyghalkias) and consider following for more Steelers-related content and discussion.
