His added layer of insight about Jonathan Greenard as a trade candidate therefore hits with some authority.

Breer chatter with Tatum Everett at the Annual League Meeting. Within that conversation was a detour into the Greenard rumors. Apparently, the pass rusher was allowed to ask around to see how high other teams would go with his compensation, an odd but fascinating detail.

NFL Insider Offers Clarity on Jonathan Greenard Trade Process

Right now, the Vikings employ a pair of top-20 edge rushers.

The combination of Jonathan Greenard alongside Andrew Van Ginkel is impressive. The former Dolphin, in particular, is a terror on Sunday. Van Ginkel, a cyborg in shoulder pads, can get shuffled anywhere on the field, but he’s most commonly tasked with being along the edge, playing off-ball ‘backer, and even flexing out to the slot.

Sep 22, 2024; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Vikings linebacker Jonathan Greenard (58) celebrates his sack against the Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud (7) in the third quarter at U.S. Bank Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Brad Rempel-Imagn Images

Meanwhile, Greenard is meant to be the one who brings the heat. Think of him as being the flamethrower, the one who is tasked with scorching offensive tackles since he brings such great effort and physicality when trying to chase down passer.

At $19 million per year, Greenard is underpaid. What’s working against him, though, is that he’s coming off a season where he had just 3 sacks. Some of that was due to bad luck, some of that was due to injury. Regardless, he doesn’t boast a ton of leverage.

The plot thickens upon considering the detail that Breer tossed into the mix. The Vikings let Greenard — translation: Greenard’s agent — to canvass the NFL to see if there would be a team out there willing to kick over meaty money. Would that team be willing to send over that enhanced compensation alongside a draft pick(s) valuable enough to move Minnesota off their spot with the 28-year-old pass rusher?

The NFL insider offered some clarity while chatting with Everett.

“What happens with Jonathan Greenard?” Breer asks rhetorically. He goes on: “Obviously, he wanted a raise. Was given permission to go out and find out what was out there for him. And if a team was willing to give him a raise and come back with something of value, they would think about it.”

Sep 14, 2025; Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA; Minnesota Vikings linebacker Jonathan Greenard (58) celebrates a sack during the second half against the Atlanta Falcons at U.S. Bank Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Matt Krohn-Imagn Images

A few notable tidbits within the Breer reflection.

Jonathan Greenard went to the Vikings with the request of a pay bump. Fine, that’s already known. Minnesota has so far been hesitant to offer a raise. Or, at least, a raise that fits what Greenard is willing to accept. There was therefore a willingness to see if a team around the NFL would send over a precious pick or two to pry away the edge rusher.

The fascinating detail that Breer adds into the mix is that the player himself was allowed to scour the NFL’s edge rusher openings. Usually, players can’t negotiate with other teams. Doing so would be a violation of their contract. In this instance, the Vikings allowed their player to see if he was capable of commanding the compensation he was seeking. And, if it made sense for the team, a trade could follow.

Essentially, Greenard insists he’s worth more than what he’s making; the Vikings disagree, at least to a certain extent. What followed was public openness to a trade, even going so far as to allow for enhanced freedom for him to see if a team agreed that he deserves much more than what he’s making.

Greenard is listed as being 6’3″ and 259 pounds. He isn’t as athletic as Van Ginkel, but Greenard is a very good defender who does deserve more than the $19 million he’s demanding. Seeing the Vikings bump his pay to around $25 million would be about right.

If the Vikings don’t, then maybe Mr. Greenard will be able to find a different NFL team to give him the raise he desires. Some action could occur around the 2026 NFL Draft.

Senior Editor for Vikings Territory & PurplePTSD .
