In an article that proposed trade targets for each of the AFC teams, NFL analyst Ralph Vacchiano urged the Miami Dolphins to make a trade for the benefit of new quarterback Malik Willis and acquire tight end Luke Musgrave from the Packers to give him a familiar pass-catcher.

The prediction: The Dolphins acquire Musgrave for a fifth-rounder (No. 155 overall).

“Musgrave didn’t exactly light it up for the Pack after tight end Tucker Kraft tore his ACL last year, but he’s still a 6-foot-6 target with good receiving skills who has been battered by injuries in the first three years of his career,” Vacchiano wrote April 9. “There’s an upside, and the cost could be low, since Kraft is coming back to the Pack.”

Luke Musgrave is Entering Contract Year for Packers

Musgrave once seemed to have a strong chance of becoming the next big thing at tight end for the Packers after a rookie season in which he caught 34 of his 46 targets for 352 yards and a touchdown in just 11 regular-season games while battling through injuries.

In the two seasons since, though, Musgrave has fallen by the wayside in Green Bay.

Musgrave — a 2023 second-round pick — suffered a significant ankle injury just four games into the 2024 season and spent most of the season on the injured reserve list. Ultimately, he caught just seven passes for 45 yards in seven total appearances, while Tucker Kraft broke out with 50 receptions for 707 yards and seven touchdowns.

Then, in 2025, Musgrave seemed to have an opportunity for redemption when Kraft tore his ACL and missed the second half of the regular season, but he struggled to raise the bar on his production even with a more meaningful role for the offense. He played all 17 games for the first time in his career but tallied just 24 catches for 252 yards.

Now, Musgrave is probably not on the roster bubble at this point. He has one more year left on his rookie contract before both he and Kraft — a 2023 third-rounder — will need new contracts to remain with the Packers. With Kraft the obvious extension candidate, though, the Packers may feel that a mid-round offer is acceptable to offload Musgrave.

Packers Can Reload TE Position Without Luke Musgrave

Musgrave is certainly not bad insurance for the Packers to have at the tight end position with Kraft coming off a season-ending knee injury, but Matt LaFleur’s current coaching staff has shown a knack for developing street free agents into servicable depth pieces. They did it in 2024 with Ben Sims and again in 2025 with John FitzPatrick and Josh Whyle, the latter of whom remains under contract with the team for the 2026 season.

The Packers could also put one of their current draft picks to use finding a replacement for Musgrave in the draft. While the fifth-rounder that they would gain in Fox Sports’ trade prediction could offer them ammunition to trade up, they could just as easily put it to use finding another tight end who can step into Musgraves’ shoes for the offense.

Ohio State’s Will Kacmarek could appeal to them as a big-bodied athlete with strong hands and reliable blocking ability. Stanford’s Sam Roush might also interest them with his upside as a pass-catcher; although, there is a chance he won’t make it to Day 3.

 Jordan J.
