{"id":864946,"date":"2026-04-12T16:25:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-12T16:25:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/864946\/"},"modified":"2026-04-12T16:25:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-12T16:25:10","slug":"ranking-texans-draft-classes-over-the-last-decade","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/864946\/","title":{"rendered":"Ranking Texans&#8217; Draft Classes Over the Last Decade"},"content":{"rendered":"<p id=\"inline-text-0\" class=\"mt-[18px] md:mt-0 mb-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6g\">With the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-2026-nfl-draft-picks-full-list\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">2026 NFL Draft<\/a> right around the corner for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-nico-collins-explains-mindset-when-not-targeted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Texans<\/a> and the rest of the league, it makes for a perfect time to take a look back at how some of the drafts and their respective classes in years past have ended up panning out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-1\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6j\">For the Texans in particular, there are certainly a few major highs and lows to take note of. And while things have begun to turn around for the better in the past handful of seasons under the guidance of general manager Nick Caserio, the years before it certainly look pretty dark in comparison.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6m\">Let&#8217;s turn the clock back to rank the last 10 Texans&#8217; draft classes to see which were home runs, and which fans would likely love to have a chance to do-over:<\/p>\n<p>10. 2016<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kp10k7t6xbrhkqhvf0.jpg\" alt=\"Oct 6, 2019; Houston, TX, USA; Houston Texans defensive end D.J. Reader, DL<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">Of all the Texans&#8217; past 10 draft classes to sort through, none shakes out as ugly as 2016&#8217;s does. Outside of the lone bright spot that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/three-free-agents-still-available-who-could-start-houston-texans\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">D.J. Reader<\/a> brings as a day-three steal, the rest is pretty brutal.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">Their top pick of Will Fuller never panned out due to injury, their second-rounder, Nick Martin, didn&#8217;t play another NFL snap just two years after being cut from the Texans in 2021, and their third-round receiver, Braxton Miller, didn&#8217;t make it to three seasons in the pros. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images | Troy Taormina-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R3, P90: Jonathan Greenard, DL<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7t\">A class where the Texans only had five total picks, and only one of those selections ended up hitting big in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-de-jonathan-greenard-new-position-freedom-more-production-news\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jonathan Greenard<\/a>, 2020 is yet another low-light in Houston&#8217;s draft history. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7w\">Their highest selection, the 40th-overall pick, Ross Blacklock, played just two seasons in Houston before he left for the Minnesota Vikings, and even Greenard&#8217;s time with the Texans was cut short after he left to join the Vikings as well in free agency following his best career season in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>8. 2018<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kp10ne9ejdyffkj0h1.jpg\" alt=\"Oct 24, 2021; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Houston Texans safety Justin Reid (20) against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stad\" title=\"Oct 24, 2021; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Houston Texans safety Justin Reid (20) against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stad\" width=\"5105\" height=\"2871\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"89\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Oct 24, 2021; Glendale, Arizona, USA; Houston Texans safety Justin Reid (20) against the Arizona Cardinals at State Farm Stadium. Rebilas-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R3, P89: Justin Reid, DB<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8g\">Another example of a draft where the Texans were both limited in capital and didn&#8217;t hit on many picks, the Texans&#8217; highest selection on the board came at pick 89 in the third round, where they were able to secure safety <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-kansas-city-chiefs-justin-reid-return-nrg-stadium-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Justin Reid<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8j\">Outside of that pickup, though, the Texans only saw one of their selections play past 2020, that being tight end Jordan Akins, who last suited up in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>7. 2019<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kp10pa4qkaa28k60yh.jpg\" alt=\"Dec 15, 2024; Houston Texans offensive tackle Tytus Howard (71) runs onto the field before the game against the Miami Dolphin\" title=\"Dec 15, 2024; Houston Texans offensive tackle Tytus Howard (71) runs onto the field before the game against the Miami Dolphin\" width=\"1882\" height=\"1058\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"8w\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dec 15, 2024; Houston Texans offensive tackle Tytus Howard (71) runs onto the field before the game against the Miami Dolphins at NRG Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images | Troy Taormina-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R1, P23: Tytus Howard, OL<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"93\">A marginally better class than the latter three; 2019&#8217;s class of selections was headlined by the pickup of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/three-questions-houston-texans-must-answer-tytus-howard-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tytus Howard<\/a> in the back-end of the first round, who was the Texans&#8217; longest tenured player outside of kicker Ka&#8217;imi Fairbairn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/tytus-howard-shares-honest-thoughts-houston-texans-cleveland-browns-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">before he was traded to the Cleveland Browns this offseason<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"96\">The class also included two names who have since developed elsewhere into steady depth pieces: cornerback Lonnie Johnson and defensive lineman Charles Omenihu. But Houston&#8217;s 2025 class is already shaping up to be better than a good chunk of the Bill O&#8217;Brien era Texans. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/texans-jayden-higgins-given-bold-year-one-prediction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jayden Higgins<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-veteran-says-sky-is-not-the-limit-aireontae-ersery\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Aireontae Ersery<\/a> project to be long-term starters, Woody Marks has shown he can be an explosive offensive weapon, and there&#8217;s even more names in this class yet to see their ceiling truly unlocked like Jaylin Smith.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9t\">Perhaps next year can allow this group to shift further up the list, but for now, right outside of the top five seems like a fair placement.<\/p>\n<p>5. 2017<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kp10r6j79371h7rgn0.jpg\" alt=\"Apr 27, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Deshaun Watson (Clemson) poses with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (right) as he is sele\" title=\"Apr 27, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Deshaun Watson (Clemson) poses with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (right) as he is sele\" width=\"4785\" height=\"2691\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"a6\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Apr 27, 2017; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Deshaun Watson (Clemson) poses with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell (right) as he is selected as the number 12 overall pick to the Houston Texans in the first round the 2017 NFL Draft at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images | Bill Streicher-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R1, P12: Deshaun Watson<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-31\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ad\">What&#8217;s likely considered the best class of Bill O&#8217;Brien&#8217;s time running the ship in Houston gets a big boost for being able to strike on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/legacy-deshaun-watson-texans-cleveland-browns-trade\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">what was then a franchise quarterback to build around in Deshaun Watson<\/a>. They also picked up linebacker Zach Cunningham in the second round, who&#8217;s now become a tenured veteran in the league with over 100 games played.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-32\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ag\">The substance below those top two picks is what prevents this crew from shifting further up the list. Mandatory Credit: Thomas Shea-Imagn Images | Thomas Shea-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R2, P42: Kamari Lassiter, DB<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-41\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bn\">Now things start to get good, as this class would be one where the Texans secured not just one, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-top-stars-take-stage-nfl-pro-bowl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two Pro Bowlers in their secondary with Kamari Lassiter and Calen Bullock<\/a>; both of whom came from day two selections down the board.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-42\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"bq\">Not all of their selections in this year were home runs, as second-rounder Blake Fisher has still left more to be desired in his first two seasons. Mandatory Credit: Troy Taormina-Imagn Images | Troy Taormina-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R2, P37: Jalen Pitre, DB<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-46\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"ca\">The better selection between <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-dc-praises-jalen-pitre\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jalen Pitre<\/a> in round two or securing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-cb-derek-stingley-jr-honored-by-nfl\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Derek Stingley<\/a> at third-overall can be debated, though there&#8217;s no question that 2022 turned out to be one of the bigger highlights of the Texans&#8217; recent draft history.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-47\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"cd\">Just like 2024, not all was perfect. Kenyon Green&#8217;s selection at 15th overall <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-biggest-bust-offensive-lineman-kenyon-green-training-camp-preview\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">might actually be the biggest individual bust on this list<\/a>. Mandatory Credit: Thomas Shea-Imagn Images | Thomas Shea-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Best Selection: R1, P3: Will Anderson, DL<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-51\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"cx\">The biggest turning point of the past decade for the Texans, the 2023 draft gave Houston a new identity by scooping up two top-three picks on the board, one of which was First-Team All-Pro edge rusher Will Anderson, and even allowed Houston to dig up three other starting-level guys in wide receivers Tank Dell and Xavier Hutchinson and linebacker Henry To&#8217;oTo&#8217;to.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-52\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"d0\">Say what you want about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/texans\/onsi\/news\/houston-texans-nico-collins-heartfelt-message-injured-cj-stroud\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">C.J. Stroud<\/a>, but he&#8217;s Houston&#8217;s franchise quarterback until further notice.
