That pick has been traded in three of the last four drafts. After Day 1, teams reassess their draft board and tend to get antsy if there\u2019s a player they really like. The Jets can sit back and field offers, deciding if it pays to move out of that spot,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/48457356\/will-jets-get-defensive-no-2-edge-david-bailey\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">ESPN\u2019s Rich Cimini<\/a> wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe pick could have intriguing value if quarterback Ty Simpson (Alabama) is still available. They earned the 33rd pick by tying three other teams for the worst record, receiving the first pick in the second round as part of an alternating method,\u201d Cimini added.<\/p>\n<p>History of the Pick<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/news\/2000\/0906\/726144.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">NFL officially<\/a> expanded to 32 teams ahead of the 2002 NFL draft when the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Texans<\/a> were founded.<\/p>\n<p>The first pick of the second round has often been discussed as a tradeable asset that smart teams can take advantage of. I wanted to study the history of that selection dating back to 2002.<\/p>\n<p>There have been 24 <a class=\"wpil_keyword_link\" href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/\" title=\"NFL\" data-wpil-keyword-link=\"linked\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"223603\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">NFL<\/a> drafts from 2002 through 2025. The first pick of the second round has been traded seven times, including in three of the last four years.<\/p>\n<p>2004<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/las-vegas-raiders\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Oakland Raiders<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2003 third-round pick (No. 83 overall) and a 2003 seventh-round pick (No. 262 overall)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/houston-texans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Houston Texans<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2004 second-round pick<\/p>\n<p>This trade happened a year in advance (April of 2003). The pick would end up being the top pick in the second round; however, it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstontexans.com\/news\/texans-snag-hollings-in-supplemental-draft-2682942\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">was forfeited<\/a> a few months later (July of 2003) after the Texans took Georgia Tech running back Tony Hollings in the supplemental draft.<\/p>\n<p>2011<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/carolina-panthers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Carolina Panthers<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2010 third-round pick (No. 89 overall)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/new-england-patriots\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New England Patriots<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2011 second-round pick (No. 33 overall)<\/p>\n<p>This trade <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/blog\/new-england-patriots\/post\/_\/id\/4677839\/patriots-pick-up-11-second-rounder\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">also happened<\/a> a year in advance (April of 2010).<\/p>\n<p>2015<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/tennessee-titans\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tennessee Titans<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2015 second rounder (No. 40 overall), a 2015 fourth rounder (No. 108 overall), and a 2015 seventh rounder (No. 245)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/new-york-giants\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">New York Giants<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2015 second-rounder (No. 33 overall)<\/p>\n<p>This was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/giants-trade-up-to-select-alabama-safety-landon-collins-0ap3000000489975#:~:text=The%20second%20round%20of%20the,selected%20Alabama%20safety%20Landon%20Collins.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">first of the<\/a> trades that happened in the moment on draft day.<\/p>\n<p>2017<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/cleveland-browns\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Cleveland Browns<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2017 first-round pick (No. 29 overall)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/green-bay-packers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Green Bay Packers<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2017 second-round pick (No. 33 overall) and a 2017 fourth-round pick (No. 108 overall)<\/p>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.clevelandbrowns.com\/news\/browns-acquire-a-3rd-1st-round-pick-in-trade-with-green-bay-packers-18785908#:~:text=The%20Browns%20acquired%20a%20third,with%20the%20Green%20Bay%20Packers.&amp;text=Cleveland%20sent%20its%20second%2Dround,first%2Dround%20pick%20(No.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">move allowed<\/a> Cleveland to acquire a third first-round draft choice in 2017 by moving back up.<\/p>\n<p>2022<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/jacksonville-jaguars\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2022 first-round pick (No. 27 overall)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/tampa-bay-buccaneers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tampa Bay Buccaneers<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2022 second-round pick (No. 33 overall), a 2022 fourth-round pick (No. 106 overall), and a 2022 sixth-round pick (No. 180 overall)<\/p>\n<p>The Jags <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buccaneers.com\/news\/nfl-draft-bucs-jaguars-trade-first-round-2022\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">gave up<\/a> three picks to get back into the first round.<\/p>\n<p>2023<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/chicago-bears\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chicago Bears<\/a> receive:\u00a0wide receiver <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/nfl\/player\/chase-claypool\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Chase Claypool<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/pittsburgh-steelers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2023 second-round pick (No. 33 overall)<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the 2022 NFL trade deadline, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobears.com\/news\/chase-claypool-trade-steelers-second-round-pick-bears-roster-move\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">the Steelers<\/a> flipped Claypool to Chicago for a second-round draft choice that ended up becoming the first pick of day two.<\/p>\n<p>2024<\/p>\n<p>Carolina Panthers receive:\u00a0a 2024 first-round pick (No. 32 overall) and a 2024 sixth-round pick (No. 200 overall)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/buffalo-bills\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Buffalo Bills<\/a> receive:\u00a0a 2024 second-round pick (No. 33 overall) and a 2024 fifth-round pick (No. 141 overall)<\/p>\n<p>Finally, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalobills.com\/news\/buffalo-bills-acquire-no-33-overall-pick-from-carolina-panthers-2024-nfl-draft#:~:text=33%20overall%20pick%20from%20Carolina%20Panthers%20%7C%202024%20NFL%20Draft,-Apr%2025%2C%202024&amp;text=The%20Buffalo%20Bills%20are%20trading,32%20overall%20pick.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Bills swapped<\/a> a pair of picks for a pair of picks.<\/p>\n<p>Could the Jets Get Creative?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo [pick No.] 33, we know how valuable it is, but we have seen it over the years where teams will say I will give you a first-round pick in 2027. Now the Jets already have three first-round picks in 2027 \u2026 I mean, what do you think about the scenario there?\u201d Jets senior reporter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=FKrDUp6yYWM\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">Eric Allen asked<\/a> NBC Sports draft analyst Connor Rogers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s tough to say no. Now this is where collaboration is so important, where AG [Aaron Glenn] will have a feel for the roster and where they need to add,\u201d Rogers explained. \u201cIf they felt like the roster was in a place that it was competitive enough going forward that they can wait, it\u2019s tough to say no to that scenario. Think about how the <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/los-angeles-rams\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rams<\/a> are feeling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/nfl\/story\/_\/id\/47435325\/los-angeles-rams-atlanta-falcons-2025-nfl-draft-trade-secure-future-la\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external nofollow\">after acquiring<\/a> that <a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/nfl\/atlanta-falcons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Atlanta<\/a> first-round pick last year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There isn\u2019t a history of that transpiring specifically with the 33rd overall pick, but there is a first time for everything.<\/p>\n<p>\n\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/author\/boygreen25\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Paul Esden Jr.<\/a> covers the New York Jets for Heavy.com.
