According to team president Rod Wood, the situation for Gibbs is “unique because his fifth-year option and franchise tags get outrageous with him making the Pro Bowl and linebackers are linebackers.”

“The reality is if we have the right guy, the sooner you do him, the better,” Wood continued. “Because it’s just going to get more expensive. Running backs might be a little bit different, although what happened in free agency, Walker had a pretty big contract. And I think we got [previous extensions done with Amon-Ra St. Brown, Sewell and Williams] at deals that look pretty good right now. The longer you wait, you add more information but you might be paying a lot more, which might take away your ability to do the next guy.”

Jahmyr Gibbs Emerged As A Top Offensive Weapon For The Lions In 2025

This past season saw the true emergence of Gibbs, who racked up an impressive 1,223 yards and 13 touchdowns on 243 carries. Additionally, he accumulated 616 receiving yards on 77 pass receptions with five touchdowns. Thanks to his efforts, he earned Pro Bowl honors for the third straight season.

Meanwhile, Campbell racked up 176 total tackles with nine tackles for loss and five sacks.

For Gibbs, not helping the Lions to a postseason spot in 2025 for what would have been the third consecutive season was a disappointing finish to a campaign that began with so much promise.

“Disappointing for sure,” Gibbs said after Detroit concluded the regular season with a victory over the rival Chicago Bears. “We always have hopes to make it to the Super Bowl, and if not that, at least make the playoffs, and we didn’t get either.”

However, he’s aiming to turn the negative finish for the Lions into a positive for himself, and plans on coming into the upcoming 2026 NFL season better than ever.

“I think it could be a good thing. That’s how I look at it as a positive,” Gibbs said. “You learn from it. Learn as much as we can and fix mistakes going forward.”

Michael Whitaker Michael Whitaker is a sports journalist based in metro Detroit with nearly a full decade of experience with publications like Clutch Points and The Hockey News.
