{"id":865907,"date":"2026-04-14T02:12:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-14T02:12:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/865907\/"},"modified":"2026-04-14T02:12:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-14T02:12:41","slug":"treyson-bourguet-is-popular-on-byus-campus-but-can-he-play-deseret-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/865907\/","title":{"rendered":"Treyson Bourguet is popular on BYU&#8217;s campus, but can he play? \u2013 Deseret News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Why are you still here?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">It is a question that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/31\/byu-football-quarterback-battle-derby-race-starter-hillstead-bourguet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/07\/31\/byu-football-quarterback-battle-derby-race-starter-hillstead-bourguet\/\">BYU\u2019s Treyson Bourguet<\/a>, a backup quarterback from Tucson, Arizona, by way of Western Michigan, has been asked for several years now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The 6-foot-2, 205-pounder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2026\/03\/30\/byu-football-qb2-backup-bourguet-watson-enoch-bachmeier-bear-roderick-hughes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2026\/03\/30\/byu-football-qb2-backup-bourguet-watson-enoch-bachmeier-bear-roderick-hughes\/\">emerged from BYU\u2019s recently completed spring football practices<\/a> as Bear Bachmeier\u2019s likely replacement if, heaven forbid, the wonder kid who set the Big 12 on fire as a freshman last fall gets injured or otherwise leaves the field in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cWe feel good about (Bourguet and fellow backup Enoch Watson, a freshman),\u201d offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said. \u201cWe feel like we can win football games with either one of those guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">After it became apparent that Bachmeier was going to return for his sophomore season, his backup in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/08\/13\/byu-cougars-qb-competition-gets-whittled-down-bear-bachmeier-mcae-hillstead\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2025\/08\/13\/byu-cougars-qb-competition-gets-whittled-down-bear-bachmeier-mcae-hillstead\/\">McCae Hillstead<\/a>, entered the transfer portal in early January and eventually landed at Utah State \u2014 the school at which he began his college career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen it all and, to me, there\u2019s no place I would rather be than here in Provo, Utah, with the BYU Cougars, and going to school at BYU. I am just blessed beyond words. I can\u2019t say enough how thankful I am to be here at BYU with coach (Aaron) Roderick and coach Kalani (Sitake) and everybody on the staff. This is home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 \u00a0BYU backup QB Treyson Bourguet<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But Bourguet stayed, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2026\/04\/08\/byu-cougars-football-depth-chart-offense-2026-post-spring-bachmeier-bear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2026\/04\/08\/byu-cougars-football-depth-chart-offense-2026-post-spring-bachmeier-bear\/\">much to the relief of Roderick and his staff<\/a>. Last August, Bachmeier had beat out Hillstead and Bourguet for the starting job, after 2024 starter Jake Retzlaff left for Tulane in July. Bachmeier didn\u2019t arrive at BYU until June, but still beat out the two veterans for the QB1 designation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A few weeks ago, Bourguet told the Deseret News that the decision to return was difficult but that it came down to a loyalty that he felt for the program, his teammates and coaches, and the desire to get his degree this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He will graduate from the Marriott School of Business next week.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI could have gone somewhere else and competed for the QB1 job or even been told, \u2018Hey, you are going to come here and you are going to be QB1,\u2019\u201d Bourguet said. \u201cThat\u2019s hard to say no to, especially when you add NIL, and how much money people are throwing at you just to come in and be their guy. But at the end of the day, I ultimately decided to come back to BYU.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">A pair of quarterbacks who prepped at Bountiful High \u2014 Snow College transfer Max Barker and returned missionary Owen Geilman \u2014 have been added to the BYU quarterbacks room since Hillstead departed, and Bourguet has already gone out of his way to praise them, along with Watson.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Teammates say that\u2019s what kind of guy he is \u2014 a team-first, selfless leader willing to sacrifice personal accolades for the good of the group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cTreyson is a big culture guy,\u201d Bachmeier said.<\/p>\n<p>\u2019No place I would rather be than Provo\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Bourguet said since he graduated from Arizona\u2019s Saltpoint Catholic High in 2022 and played in 10 games at Western Michigan in 2022 and 2023 that he has \u201cbeen around the block\u201d and realized what is really important in a college football program. He completed 111 of 212 passes for 1,314 yards and six touchdowns during his time in Kalamazoo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI have been at every seat at the table,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve been the starting quarterback. I\u2019ve been the backup quarterback. I\u2019ve been the third-string quarterback. I\u2019ve been the freshman just trying to compete for reps in fall camp.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen it all and, to me, there\u2019s no place I would rather be than here in Provo, Utah, with the BYU Cougars, and going to school at BYU,\u201d he continued. \u201cI am just blessed beyond words. I can\u2019t say enough how thankful I am to be here at BYU with coach Roderick and coach Kalani (Sitake) and everybody on the staff. This is home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Bourguet describes himself as a \u201cspiritual person\u201d from a \u201cvery loyal and faithful family\u201d who believes in God although he is not a member of the faith that supports BYU, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cI have amazing parents (Toby and Vanessa) and siblings who serve the Lord and do what we preach,\u201d he said. \u201cI\u2019ve got a great foundation, and things may change in my life, where I am living or what I am doing, or my health, but I know my foundation is rock solid, and no matter what happens to me, I am going to get knocked down, but my foundation is going to help me get back up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Can the \u2018big culture guy\u2019 play Power Four football?<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Bourguet has appeared in only one game for the Cougars \u2014 the 2025 season opener against Portland State in which he ran once for 21 yards and did not attempt a pass \u2014 and, quite frankly, has not looked particularly sharp or accurate in the media viewing portions of practices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">He does throw a really nice deep ball, and teammates say he is one of the best athletes on the team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">But coaches insist he can play, direct the offense, and deliver the ball accurately and on time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cTreyson\u2019s a veteran player. He knows our offense very well. Has a lot of respect from his teammates. He\u2019s playing good football,\u201d Roderick said after the third week of camp. \u201cWe have lots of confidence in him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Roderick said that coaches are letting the QB2 competition \u201cplay out until we get to the season,\u201d but acknowledged that Bourguet \u201chas the advantage\u201d of knowing the offense better than Watson does.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cTreyson is an underrated athlete,\u201d Roderick said. \u201cWhen he goes in, we don\u2019t skip a beat. We can operate at a high level with Treyson right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">If nothing else, Bourguet had a hand in getting one of BYU\u2019s top offseason acquisitions to Provo in January. He and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2026\/01\/08\/byu-adds-oregon-receiver-kyler-kasper\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/sports\/2026\/01\/08\/byu-adds-oregon-receiver-kyler-kasper\/\">new receiver Kyler Kasper<\/a>, the Oregon transfer, were teammates on an Arizona-based seven-on-seven team that \u201cnever lost a game\u201d when they were in high school.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cOnce I hit the portal, Treyson was the first person I talked to from BYU, and then he got me in touch with everybody else,\u201d Kasper said. \u201cI\u2019ve always had tremendous respect for Treyson as a person, and a football player.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Watson, a returned missionary from Queen Creek, Arizona, who participated in practices last December before the bowl game, said both Bourguet and Bachmeier have helped him get up to speed in terms of learning the playbook and the culture of the program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">\u201cTreyson is such a phenomenal quarterback, but he\u2019s also a phenomenal person,\u201d Watson said. \u201cHe\u2019s such a good culture man.
