The Penn State Nittany Lions are receiving a major boost this spring, and it has everything to do with quarterback Rocco Becht. The senior signal-caller, who followed head coach Matt Campbell from Iowa State to Happy Valley<\/a>, is recovering from a pair of shoulder injuries, and according to those closest to the program, his progress has been nothing short of remarkable.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe’ll be ready to rock and roll,\u201d Campbell said during a recent press conference<\/a>. \u201cI think the fact that we’ve gotten this much out of him was way ahead of probably where we thought we would have been.\u201d<\/p>\n

After a tough 2025 season at Iowa State, Becht had surgery on his left, non-throwing shoulder during the offseason. He also hurt his throwing shoulder, which needed shots every Tuesday and Wednesday just so he could practice during the last few weeks of last season. Even with those problems, Becht fought through it all, which shows the toughness that Campbell has praised many times.<\/p>\n

Through 10 spring practices, Becht has steadily expanded his participation in on-field work. He has logged 7-on-7 reps and has been an active presence guiding Penn State’s offensive unit even when limited to an observer role during 11-on-11 live periods.<\/p>\n

\u201cEvery day you walk past the team meeting room at 4 o’clock and he’s got the entire receiving corps and tight end corps, meeting with those guys and going over practice,\u201d Campbell said. \u201cHis leadership out on the football field and in this locker room \u2014 it’s critical.\u201d<\/p>\n

Becht has put building chemistry with a new team ahead of getting better physically. He knows offensive coordinator Taylor Mouser and quarterbacks coach Jake Waters from their time together at Iowa State. This could give Marshall an advantage when they visit Beaver Stadium on September 5.<\/p>\n

\u201cI feel a lot better, and that’s really the biggest thing for me,\u201d Becht said. \u201cI don’t want to have a season like I did last year.\u201d<\/p>\n

With 9,274 career passing yards and 83 combined touchdowns at Iowa State, Becht arrives in State College as a proven, battle-tested leader, and based on everything Penn State is seeing this spring, the Nittany Lions couldn’t be more confident about their quarterback heading into 2026.<\/p>\n
