That includes a plan for Jalen Ramsey, who bounced around the secondary a bit under the previous coaching staff in 2025. But to new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, keeping him versatile and moving around the secondary might be a good thing.

“So, definitely a chess piece. You’re asking me a question now in April, and this league is so competitive. He’s a good football player, I’ll give you that. He’s a good football player, and he happens to be a defensive back,” Graham said Friday via Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “The thing that stood out to me, in the short time I spoke to him, is his energy. What you’re going to find with out group, the goal is to be as multiple as possible, in terms of having multiple roles.”

Ramsey started the 2025 season at cornerback, the Steelers hoping he’d form a solid trio with Joey Porter Jr. and Darius Slay. Unfortunately, the latter struggled and was released midway through the season. While Porter played at a high level, Ramsey did have some limitations at the position and was moved to safety after injuries hit the back end of the Steelers’ defense.

Considering the midseason adjustment Jalen Ramsey had to make, he did a solid job after transitioning to that spot. Some figured with his age — Ramsey turns 32 in October — the Steelers will keep him there in 2026 as well. But it doesn’t sound like he’ll have one permanent home in the secondary.

Along with Graham, new head coach Mike McCarthy has stressed positional versatility, on both sides of the ball. On Ramsey specifically, McCarthy mentioned having positive conversations with him, and McCarthy appreciates Ramsey’s ability to play safety, nickel, dime and outside cornerback if needed.

Pittsburgh did well to address depth in free agency, so there isn’t one where position it desperately needs Ramsey. Pittsburgh has Porter and Jamel Dean at cornerback, as well as a decent amount of depth behind them. At safety, DeShon Elliott comes back from injury, and the Steelers are adding Jaquan Brisker and Darnell Savage as well. It there’s any spot they might need Ramsey the most, it could be nickel, where there isn’t a ton of depth.

However, it doesn’t sound like Jalen Ramsey will have a set position in 2026. And that should be a good thing for the Steelers. When he’s in the right position, Ramsey can still make game-changing plays on the back end. The Steelers need to add secondary depth during the draft, but having Ramsey as a chess piece back there could do a load of good for their defense.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still figuring some things out on the defensive side of the ball.
