Washington Commanders<\/a> general manager Adam Peters didn’t need to see Sam Cosmi play in a game before signing him to a multi-year extension last September. The four-year extension was worth $74 million, with $45 million guaranteed.<\/p>\n

Cosmi started every game at right guard in his fourth NFL season. Unfortunately, Cosmi suffered a knee injury in Washington’s NFC Divisional Round playoff upset win over the Detroit Lions<\/a> in January. Suffering an injury so late in the season meant Cosmi likely would miss at least some of the 2025 season.<\/p>\n

On Wednesday, head coach Dan Quinn spoke to reporters after Washington’s OTA practice and offered an update on Cosmi.<\/p>\n

“Sam is doing excellent,” Quinn said. “Like, he has really put the work in, he’s hitting all the markers that he’s supposed to. We’re not gonna miss one step along the process. But it starts with him, man, like just the, the everyday intensity that goes with it. There’s like a work mindset that comes outta that, and like, that’s important cause that’s who Sam is, and he’s off to a really strong start hitting all the markers he’s supposed to up to now.”<\/p>\n

Quinn said a lot without really saying too much here. That’s typical coachspeak, but he didn’t say Cosmi suffered any setbacks or mention how long Cosmi would be out. It’s only been four months since Cosmi’s injury, so he’s nowhere near a full return. However, it sounds like he’s on the right path. When Quinn says Cosmi is “hitting all the markers,” that’s a good thing.<\/p>\n

Fortunately, the Commanders are prepared if Cosmi misses time. After trading for left tackle Laremy Tunsil, Washington used a first-round pick on offensive tackle Josh Conerly. That leaves last season’s starting tackles, Brandon Coleman and Andrew Wylie, as candidates to move inside and play guard.<\/p>\n
