While quarterback Taylor Elgersma never took a regular-season snap for the Green Bay Packers, he became a bit of a fan favorite last year, as he effectively came out of nowhere (at least to Americans) to earn himself an NFL contract after a strong tryout ahead of rookie minicamp. He then performed well in the preseason, so well that we were actually calling for him to earn the QB3 slot<\/a> behind Jordan Love and Malik Willis. <\/p>\n

That, of course, didn’t happen, as the Canadian superstar was released last August<\/a> as part of final roster cuts. He had interest from a number of other clubs, a list that includes the Chicago Bears, Miami Dolphins, New York Giants, and San Francisco 49ers, but nothing ever came to fruition. <\/p>\n

Elgersma was taken by the Birmingham Stallions in the 2026 UFL Draft back in January, but that didn’t work out for him either, as there were issues with his work visa. He could practice with the team but couldn’t play in games. And to make matters worse, he couldn’t be paid. The 24-year-old did everything in his power to work things out, but there was apparently nothing that could be done, and he was ultimately released this past week. <\/p>\n

But it didn’t take him long to find a home, as Elgersma has officially signed<\/a> a three-year contract in his home country with the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who actually drafted the London, Ontario native last year.<\/p>\n

For those unfamiliar with Elgersma, he was an absolute stud at the collegiate level at Wilfrid Laurier. <\/p>\n

After earning Second-Team All-Canadian honors in 2023, he took things up a notch in 2024, earning First-Team honors while also winning the coveted Hec Crighton Trophy, which is Canada’s version of the Heisman Trophy, after completing 73.5 percent of his passes for 4,011 yards and 34 touchdowns against 10 interceptions, adding another 229 yards and six scores on the ground.<\/p>\n

Because of that success, Elgersma became a national hero by becoming the first quarterback from a Canadian university to participate in the Senior Bowl, where he connected on four of seven passes for 57 yards. <\/p>\n

Last April, he was the first quarterback taken in the 2025 CFL Draft, going in the second round at No. 18 overall to Winnipeg. So, while it might have taken him a minute to end up where he was apparently always supposed to be, Elgersma will now get his shot with the Blue Bombers. And one would assume that, unlike his time in the UFL, he’ll get a paycheck for playing pro football this time around.<\/p>\n
