The main thing considered was they had no second starting safety.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-2\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6o\">&#8220;He\u2019s a very similar type person, player, combination to what Colston was,&#8221; Poles said. &#8220;The work ethic, that passion for ball was off the charts. We grade on a scale of 1-9. There\u2019s no 5s and there\u2019s no 2s. There\u2019s no fence grades.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">&#8220;There\u2019s a lot of 7s and 8s when you look across this guy\u2019s character. Really happy with the type of person we\u2019re bringing in.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">Where Loveland was a player coach Ben Johnson needed to make his attack work, Thieneman is the type of versatile safety defensive coordinator Dennis Allen needs to make his scheme work.<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Going defensive line tomorrow Ryan Poles? <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/Z4edDqyZum\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/Z4edDqyZum<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bears On SI (@BearsOnSI) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BearsOnSI\/status\/2047541569784275371?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 24, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-6\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"70\">As a result, Poles felt entirely comfortable going to the secondary instead of defensive line in Round 1, and apparently Johnson did as well. <\/p>\n<p>Ben Johnson like what he saw<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"76\">&#8220;He was fired up,&#8221; Poles said of Johnson. &#8220;We\u2019ve spent time together. He would come in and watch tape with our group. This is one of the guys that we had on when he was in. I mean, we both \u2026 I can now feel Ben. He doesn\u2019t say anything. I can feel his body language start to get excited by somebody.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"79\">&#8220;You can feel it. It\u2019s that style of play he has that\u2019s contagious. It\u2019s the type of player that we want on our football team.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dillon Thieneman was jumping off the Bears&#8217; board at 25. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/AeHSXN0RJG\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/AeHSXN0RJG<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bears On SI (@BearsOnSI) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BearsOnSI\/status\/2047542213664469408?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 24, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7f\">Poles foresees the addition of Thieneman into a secondary with Kyler Gordon, Coby Bryant, Jaylon Johnson and Tyrique Stevenson as a continuation of last year&#8217;s league-leading takeaway total.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7i\">&#8220;Obviously there was a lot of turnovers,&#8221; he said of their 33 takeaways. &#8220;You can increase that number, which is going to be a big challenge for those guys.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7l\">&#8220;But like I said, taking the air out, every time we\u2019ve seen a defense and you feel like it\u2019s suffocating because of the speed, that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7o\">Thieneman&#8217;s 4.35-second speed in the 40 and his cerebral approach to the game are fine, but Poles definitely didn&#8217;t see him as a safety who someone would tag with a finesse label.  <\/p>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dillon Thieneman, a 4.35-second 40, 41-inch vertical and he&#8217;s also a student of the game. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/kBdtBrxz2L\" rel=\"nofollow\">pic.twitter.com\/kBdtBrxz2L<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Bears On SI (@BearsOnSI) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/BearsOnSI\/status\/2047545248520290340?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">April 24, 2026<\/a>A hitter<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7x\">&#8220;He\u2019s a violent football player,&#8221; Poles said. &#8220;He strikes. There\u2019s a knock-back element to his tackling and again, there\u2019s speed and there\u2019s violent speed in terms of just the explosion off the spot and that\u2019s what he brings.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-18\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"80\">&#8220;It\u2019s pretty easy tape to watch.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"83\">As the picks were coming off, Poles and the Bears personnel and coaches waited anxiously. Thieneman had been a player projected by most mock drafts to go five to 10 picks earlier. He was elevated on the board. We kind of work lateral and see who else is up there and he was No. 1 on our priority list. We take the board obviously before all this kicks off and we sequence it and he was the top sequence guy on our board.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8c\">The Bears personnel department runs through its own mock drafts and Poles couldn&#8217;t say they were convinced they&#8217;d get a chance to draft Thieneman.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-23\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8f\">&#8220;It was 50\/50 with him oftentimes, so we weren\u2019t sure if he was going to make it,&#8221; Poles said. &#8220;Eighteen seemed to be the (draft) spot that everyone said that he was going to.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-24\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8i\">&#8220;We knew if he got past that there was a good chance.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-25\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8l\">The Vikings were taking 18th and safety was one alternative for them. Instead, they took Florida defensive tackle Caleb Banks, the massive lineman with tremendous upside and a questionable foot. Thieneman was probably a fit for only one of the other draft spots before the Bears after the Vikings, but not an idea one. He was ideal for the Bears, who needed another safety starter<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-26\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8o\">&#8220;Again, in our sequence we had probably two more guys that were close (in grade to Thieneman,&#8221; Poles said. &#8220;So we knew that we were going to get a good football player.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-27\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8r\">&#8220;I drew a line on our top 100 of ones that we would be looking to trade back, trade up, and it fell where we had a couple guys there in the sequence. We looked to potentially move back a little bit; there wasn\u2019t much interest right behind us where we felt comfortable in terms of the numbers.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-28\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8u\">Poles isn&#8217;t giving up on getting defensive line help on Day 2. <\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kpyyxmc60sck6bxtmx.jpg\" alt=\"Dillon Thieneman (31) helps tackle Texas Tech Red Raiders running back J'Koby Williams in a quarterfinal playoff game.\" title=\"Dillon Thieneman (31) helps tackle Texas Tech Red Raiders running back J'Koby Williams in a quarterfinal playoff game.\" width=\"4099\" height=\"2305\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"94\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Dillon Thieneman (31) helps tackle Texas Tech Red Raiders running back J&#8217;Koby Williams in a quarterfinal playoff game. | Sam Navarro-Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p>Defensive line for Day 2?<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-31\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9b\">&#8220;I think there&#8217;s some opportunity for guys on the board still,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-32\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9e\">However, the defensive front&#8217;s main goal now is improving from within.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-33\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9h\">&#8220;And then absolutely, just what these guys are working on this week (at conditioning) was for that group to continue to get better so they can be more effective,&#8221; Poles said. &#8220;I know the coaches spend a lot of time in the offseason detailing spots where they feel like we can get better, maybe some tweaks in what we&#8217;re doing, the way we&#8217;re coaching things. And then, naturally, just a second year in the system, you would think that some of these guys would continue to get better and elevate their game.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-34\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9k\">&#8220;And then if you help the secondary like, you know, they&#8217;re related to a degree. Obviously the D-line helps the back end more often than not. But in this situation where, we have good corners, good safeties, we can be in a position where maybe we can have the quarterback hold the ball a little longer.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-35\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9n\">That&#8217;s probably not ideal, even if it sounds good at the moment. Pressure helps players like Thieneman in the back to make plays on the ball.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-36\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-secondary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"9q\">Poles had called defensive end a place where there were good numbers prior to the draft.
