The Cowboys just added one of the top players of the 2026 draft class, and didn\u2019t have to give up much extra to go get him. After trading up to 11th with the Miami Dolphins, Dallas made Ohio State safety Caleb Downs their first pick in 2026. As one of this year\u2019s highest-rated prospects, what does Downs bring to the Cowboys\u2019 defense?<\/p>\n
The 6\u20190\u201d, 206-lb. Downs is considered by many to be the smartest and most instinctively gifted player in this class. At just 21 years old, he\u2019s been a leader for the Buckeyes and won a National Championship in 2024. He was last year\u2019s Jim Thorpe Award winner, given to the nation\u2019s best defensive back. From supreme talent to high character, the Cowboys are getting a proven winner and a massive talent infusion in the secondary.<\/p>\n
Though we\u2019re still waiting to learn more about Christian Parker\u2019s scheme changes as the new defensive coordinator, it\u2019s not hard to see how Downs fits in. He should immediately move into a starting role, pairing with veteran free agent pickup Jalen Thompson when the Cowboys are in their base scheme. Parker is expected to use a lot of two-high safety looks, which would give Downs and Thompson each a side of the field to patrol.<\/p>\n
But versatility is one of Downs\u2019 other advertised traits, so don\u2019t expect him to just hang out on the back end. In fact, many have Downs\u2019 best play coming closer to the line as either a box safety or even a nickel back. He figured to be a classic \u201cchess piece\u201d for Parker, able to leave offenses guessing about where he\u2019ll line up and where he\u2019ll actually go at the snap.<\/p>\n
Adding Downs seems to complete the Cowboys\u2019 safety room for 2026. They have two new starters with him and Thompson, an experienced backup in Malik Hooker, and another versatile backup in free agent P.J. Locke. There\u2019s still Markquese Bell, too, plus developmental prospect Alijah Clark. One of those last two guys probably won\u2019t make the roster this year, unless Bell gets moved back to linebacker.<\/p>\n
Downs\u2019 arrival also helps the Cowboys\u2019 cornerback depth, if he is going to get nickel work. Dallas may still look for a CB with one of their next few picks, but this is a nice bit of insurance against the rest of the draft, DaRon Bland\u2019s foot issues, or other issues that could compromise the position going forward.<\/p>\n
No matter how he\u2019s used, Caleb Downs is going to make a difference.
