They traded into the end of the first round to select Indiana wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. (No. 30). What all three players have in common is that they each played in the College Football Playoffs. Cooper’s Indiana squad also won the national championship after defeating Miami.

“When you identify guys you like, you love, you go get them,” Glenn said. “And that’s exactly what we did. Anytime you bring guys with a winning background on your team, that only helps the morale of your team.

“There’s a lot of things that go into that, but man, to get three first-round picks and the caliber of guys that we’ve got, the personality, the mentality the football character, all those things are huge bring those guys on your team.”

Since the NFL Combine, there has been a debate about whether the Jets should select Bailey or Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese. Although they liked both players, the Jets decided to select production over potential.

Bailey was the best pass rusher in the nation last year after leading the FBS in sacks (14.5) last season. Reese arguably had the biggest upside of any player available in this year’s draft. But he wasn’t a full-time pass rusher, having also played off-ball linebacker at Ohio State.

Considering many have already put Glenn on the hot seat after one disastrous inaugural season, it makes sense that they chose Bailey over Reese. Bailey is the more polished pass rusher and, at almost 23, is expected to deliver immediate results.

In addition, the Jets’ defense was horrific last year, finishing 31st in points allowed and becoming the first team in NFL history to go an entire season without recording an interception.

However, the Bailey versus Reese debate will continue to live on. The Giants selected Reese and he will join a defense that includes pass rushers Brian Burns, Abdul Carter, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. He will likely play at middle linebacker, but Giants head coach John Harbaugh is expected to use Reese in a variety of different ways, much like at Ohio State, where he played on the edge, as an off-ball linebacker, and even as a slot defender.

But Glenn is trying to establish his program with the Jets, and Bailey hopes his time at Texas Tech will help the Jets escape their 15-year playoff drought.

“The reason we had the success that we had at Tech was a lot more than me,” Bailey said. “It was the staff, the alumni, the players that we acquired.

“Creating a great routine, effective routine, staying consistent with that routine. I’m looking to carry on the same thing in my pro career.”

The Jets also added two playmakers in Sadiq and Cooper, who are two totally different players. At 6-3, 241 pounds, Sadiq is shorter than the prototypical tight end. Still, he is a physical, explosive player who looks like a nightclub bouncer and can stretch defenses while also displaying effort as a run blocker.

At the NFL Combine in February, Sadiq ran a 4.39 40-yard dash. While the Jets went with on-field production with their first pick in Bailey, Sadiq is more of an athletic freak than a proven commodity. This was also more of a luxury pick after the Jets drafted Mason Taylor in the second round last year.

Sadiq caught 51 passes for 560 yards and eight touchdowns for the Ducks last season. But he drew criticism for his inconsistent hands despite being labeled a premier prospect. Sadiq had a 10.5% drop rate during his only season as Oregon’s starting tight end.

Unlike Sadiq, Cooper is not the flashiest receiver, especially considering he played primarily in the slot last season. But he exhibits toughness over the middle and the ability to attack contested passes.

Cooper finished with 69 receptions for 937 yards and 14 touchdowns for the Hoosiers. He will be expected to help a Jets offense that was last in passing yards and had just one wide receiver (Garrett Wilson) finish with more than 30 receptions.

“The coaches just feel I need to improve,” Cooper said. “Really just taking it one day at a time, making sure I come in confident. But really, just improve my all-around game, just making sure that I get more comfortable the more reps I get. And also, just coming in with a great attitude and mindset.”

The NFL Draft is a gamble, especially when a team like the Jets has three first-round picks. Their 2022 draft class was considered a home run after they selected Sauce Gardner, Wilson and Jermaine Johnson in the first round. They also drafted Breece Hall in Round 2.

But as good as that draft class was, it means nothing if the Jets cannot find a long-term solution at the quarterback position. Joe Douglas and Robert Saleh, who oversaw the 2022 draft, failed when they selected Zach Wilson a year earlier. Wilson is the lone Jets’ first-round pick from that star-studded class.

The Jets punted on selecting a quarterback in this year’s draft after Fernando Mendoza was selected by the Raiders at No. 1. With three first-round picks again next year, the success of the 2026 class will ultimately come down to whether the Jets can identify and draft the franchise quarterback they’ve been seeking for decades.

In 2022, the Jets made three first-round picks in hopes of jump-starting their rebuild.
