According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TomPelissero\/status\/2046356866125414838?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E2046356866125414838%7Ctwgr%5E58af70dd17f97e5f44fcc783e303775c34fb689d%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https:\/\/atozsports.com\/nashville\/volunteers\/nfl-network-tom-pelissero-explains-issue-teams-have-with-tennessee-cb-jermod-mccoy-knee-2026-nfl-draft\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">NFL Media<\/a>, repairs to a cartilage defect could lead to additional surgeries and require \u201cextensive\u201d recovery.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-3\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6r\">And yet, here are the Chargers with a need at cornerback and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/chargers\/onsi\/chargers-nfl-draft-tracker-every-pick-trade-instant-grade\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">armed with seven picks on Day 3 of the NFL draft<\/a> after two trades down the board.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-4\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"6u\">The Chargers rolling the proverbial dice on McCoy would be a no-brainer met with plenty of praise and perhaps long-term rewards on the field.<\/p>\n<p>NFL draft fall for Jermod McCoy should end with Chargers<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/01kq2k965k7e90yjjrnv.jpg\" alt=\"Tennessee defensive back Jermod McCoy\" title=\"Tennessee defensive back Jermod McCoy\" width=\"3619\" height=\"2035\" class=\"undefined w-full w-full blur-[5px]\" q:id=\"77\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Jermod McCoy | Caitie McMekin\/News Sentinel \/ USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-7\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7b\">McCoy might have been a top 10 pick were it not for the injury woes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-8\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7e\">Really, now that the NFL draft has hit Round 4 and beyond, that could end the conversation right there when it comes to the Chargers throwing a single pick of many at him.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-9\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7h\">So much so, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.si.com\/nfl\/chargers\/onsi\/nfl-draft-chargers-kc-concepcion-jermod-mccoy-instead-akheem-mesidor\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">we broke down why the Chargers should have considered McCoy<\/a> much earlier in the draft.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-10\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7k\">McCoy was the 17th overall player on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/draft\/big-board?season=2026\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Pro Football Focus\u2019 big board<\/a>, after all, with \u201cshutdown potential in press-man coverage.\u201d And when on the field before injury, he had an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pff.com\/news\/2026-nfl-second-round-mock-draft-ravens-grab-jermod-mccoy-bears-select-chris-bell\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">89.6 coverage grade from PFF<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-11\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7n\">Take it a step further. NFL.com\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/prospects\/jermod-mccoy\/32004d43-4360-6207-f6a8-f95179cdebe5\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Lance Zierlein<\/a>\u00a0has McCoy as one of the best players in the class and, of note, thinks his skillset is almost crafted to bounce back quickly from these injuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-12\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7q\">\u201cMore focused, physical press disruption should make the rep easier to control. He\u2019s opportunistic with strong ball skills at the catch point,\u201d Zierlein wrote. \u201cHis route squeeze and zone awareness should improve with more reps. We should expect McCoy\u2019s athletic traits and instincts to help him make up for lost time once he gets into camp.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-13\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7t\">That has Chargers written all over it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-14\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7w\">Chris O\u2019Leary is back from the college ranks to take over for Jesse Minter and has stressed a continuity theme since his return.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-15\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"7z\">The Chargers\u2019 scheme loves big-bodied press corners, with both Tarheeb Still and Cam Hart checking it at 6\u20190\u201d and up. Donte Jackson, added in free agency one year ago, isn\u2019t far off, either.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-16\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"82\">McCoy is a long-term solution there that simply fits. Hart and Still were later-round picks who have panned out well. But competition and depth are key. They\u2019ll need more flexibility across the cornerback depth chart if and when Derwin James leaves and frees up that nickel spot (he\u2019s a contract extension candidate this summer, though). Jackson is now at the dreaded age of 30, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-17\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"85\">Again, the Chargers have seven draft picks starting from Round. Three of those are in the fourth round:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-19\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8b\">There are other needs. More offensive line help. An interior pass-rusher. Whatever Mike McDaniel might want to add for his offense.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-20\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8e\">But general manager Joe Hortiz went out of his way during his pre-draft presser to note that, along with linemen, cornerbacks will be available.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-21\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8h\">\u201cThere&#8217;s going to be linemen there available,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/live\/?ref=watch_permalink&amp;v=942078605110398\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">Hortiz said<\/a>. \u201cAnd there&#8217;s going to be corners there available and there&#8217;s going to be defensive linemen there available and there&#8217;s going to be inside back&#8211; it&#8217;s a good draft.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-22\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8k\">Translated: The Chargers view cornerback as something to attack on Day 3.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-23\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8n\">Using one of those fourth-round picks on McCoy, a long-term option and borderline top-10 prospect, would be a smooth move.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-24\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8q\">What better way to help a first-time coordinator like McCoy keep things going than to gift him a possible top-10 prospect at a premium position that already has two proven long-term options with Still and Hart?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p id=\"inline-text-25\" class=\"my-[18px] [&amp;_a]:text-primary my-f-1.5\" q:key=\"0\" q:id=\"8t\">Not many, and it fits with Hortiz\u2019s value-minded ways. What\u2019s the worst-case scenario?
