I thought our guys did a really good job of handling the way that we came out today and I told our guys that this is a great first day and a great starting point and now it’s just about stacking days and getting better each day. I feel like we have the right guys with the right attitude, who will do that.”

Q: On how beneficial it is to have most of the offensive linemen here

Ryans: “It’s beneficial to always have – during this time, a voluntary time, where guys don’t have to be here. I think it’s very beneficial if guys are here because you can get a lot of good productive work done. Understanding the scheme, understanding the terminology and things that we’re using. Actually, performing the techniques and executing. Everything about our offseason program sets you up to compete come training camp. The more time on task and the more you’re able to be here and get coaching from our guys, it’s only going to help us when it comes training camp. Every person who is here will benefit from being here.”

Q: On QB C.J. Stroud mostly observing practiceRyans: “For all the guys you see here, there will be guys on different schedules, different routine, so you’ll see some guys out and some guys won’t be out. Some guys will be, some guys will be on different snap count, different pitch count, so there is nothing going on right now with any of our guys. Everyone is just on their own schedule.”

Q: On the tush push and how it was handled?

Ryans: “I think the Eagles have done a really nice job with the play. They’re using a play that benefits them and they have a quarterback who does a really good job of making that play successful. Other people have tried that play and it hasn’t been so successful, so I think first off the play goes to Jalen Hurts and credit to him and the strength that he has. The way the offensive line is executing the play. It’s a credit to Philly for them putting their players in position to make plays and that’s what coaching is all about. They’ve done a really great job of doing that.”

Q: What did he see from WR Christian Kirk during drills

Ryans: “Christian has been everything we could ask for. You talk about a guy who is dedicated to getting better. He has honed in on his craft and he’s leading our young guys. He’s a hard worker, he shows up every day with the right attitude working hard and showing guys how it’s done. That’s what I’ve seen from him through his entire career. Just pleased to now have him on our side and being able to help us and help our younger guys.”

Q: On how much competitive spirit he saw from the guys on the field today

Ryans: “Anytime you line up, it’s time to compete and that’s what I felt from our guys. You felt that competitive energy. I think everyone who is here at practice today probably felt that energy and that’s what we’re about. We’re about competing and we’re about challenging each other to make each other better and that’s what I love about the group of guys that we have. To be able to do it in an environment where you can’t go too far. You have to tow that line just a little bit, but our guys have done a great job of just being safe. First and foremost, just protecting each other, but also getting good quality work in.”

Q: On what it was like to see offensive coordinator Nick Caley interact with the team

Ryans: “Nick is the same. It doesn’t change from the moment I interviewed him, to his meetings with the players and him being out here on the field. Again, I’ve spoken about it before, you see constant energy from the guy. He’s constantly teaching the guys and trying to help the guys to the best he can. He has done a great job of leading the group, leading the coaching staff, leading the players and I’m excited to see his growth throughout this process.”

Q: On Texans players participating in the Olympics Flag Football

Ryans: “Whatever guys want to do, that’s up to them. If they want to compete in the Olympics and they’re allowed to then that’s a personal choice and I really don’t care. I only care about the Texans winning games – that’s it.”

Q: On finding the best five on the offensive line

Ryans: “This is our first day of OTAs, so when it comes to finding our best group it will be a lot of mixing and matching guys. Putting guys in different spots and seeing which five guys work well together. One thing about the o-line is that there is a lot of smart guys in that room and they can move around and play multiple spots, so that helps them. It’s just a matter of finding that five once we get to training camp and put pads on. Nobody is making the team right now in shorts and helmets.”

Q: On if there are any players who have improved as communicators and are more vocal

Ryans: “From my standpoint, guys have been the same. I mean the guys when I first got in – Will [Anderson Jr.], C.J. [Stroud], those guys have been the same. Nico [Collins] has been the same. Jalen Pitre – that’s the one thing I love about our guys is they’re steady. Nobody has to rise up and do anything different. They’re steady and guys have done a good job of just gelling together as a group. We have a really good core of leaders, who are leading our guys and know how to practice. I don’t have to spend a ton of time on teaching guys how to practice anymore because our leaders are showing the guys the way, so they make it easy on me.”

Q: On what it will take for DE Will Anderson Jr. to continue to reach new heights

Ryans: “What Will has to do to continue to step his game up and take it to another level is really – I mean football is about the fine smaller details. Its about the get off, the hand placement as a rusher, being able to convert. There are so many technical things that he can get better at as a rusher that would allow him to take his game to the next level.”

Q: On the joint practice with the Panthers and the Lions

Ryans: “We will do one day with both teams. Excited to work against those teams. You get different defensive looks from both teams. Different offensive looks and you get to do it in a competitive environment where you’re not live on the quarterback. It’s the safest way and I feel like we can get really good work for our starters against other teams. I’m excited to go against the Panthers, excited to go against the Lions. Two head coaches, who I respect a lot. Dave [Canales] has done a great job there, so I’m excited to see him. I think they’re on the rise and has done a really good job with what he has had so far, so I’m excited to see that team come in. We know what the Lions are about. Coach [Dan] Campbell and his energy and spirit as a head coach it’s just second to none. I’m excited to work with both guys and I think we can gain a lot out of both practices.”

Here’s everything Houston Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans said following the first day of voluntary OTA workouts on…

[2056
204,80,115,1466,247,265,1456,1028,3601,3607,19,25,7,221,253,2368,248,267,88,6,245,537,242,109,530,3602,327,9,266,1457,222
0":"post-87446","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-houston-texans","8":"tag-204","9":"tag-2025-nfl-draft","10":"tag-afc","11":"tag-afc-south","12":"tag-american","13":"tag-american-football","14":"tag-c-j","15":"tag-c-j-stroud","16":"tag-demeco","17":"tag-demeco-ryans","18":"tag-draft","19":"tag-eagles","20":"tag-football","21":"tag-houston","22":"tag-houston-texans","23":"tag-houstontexans","24":"tag-national","25":"tag-national-sports","26":"tag-news","27":"tag-nfl","28":"tag-overall","29":"tag-overall-positive","30":"tag-philadelphia","31":"tag-philadelphia-eagles","32":"tag-positive","33":"tag-ryans","34":"tag-south","35":"tag-sports","36":"tag-sports-news","37":"tag-stroud","38":"tag-texans
["GET
