it won\u2019t change what I\u2019ve already said<\/a>,\u201d McCarthy said Saturday, via Brooke Pryor of ESPN, when asked about the depth chart behind Rodgers. \u201cI will coach the hell out of that room. I have a lot of confidence. I have history and experience that I will give everything I can to any quarterback in that room. . . . We want to grow the quarterback room. We don\u2019t want to just rely on one quarterback.\u201d<\/p>\nSo either it\u2019ll be Allar, Rudolph, and Howard (if Rodgers doesn\u2019t play) or Rodgers and three backups. Common sense suggests that, if Rodgers comes back, one of the others will be gone.<\/p>\n
Howard would seem to be the most vulnerable. Rudolph has sufficient experience to play at a moment\u2019s notice. But they keep talking up Howard.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was very impressed with Will last week [at voluntary minicamp],\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cI know he\u2019s a good athlete. . . . But there\u2019s a training regimen that\u2019s involved, but we\u2019ll stick to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
McCarthy is also talking up Allar, predictably.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike anything, I believe in first impressions,\u201d McCarthy said. \u201cI\u2019ve had a chance to watch him play, meet him at the Combine. . . . I liked everything about him. I think he\u2019s young. I think he\u2019s got a lot of room for growth. And he\u2019s a young man that can throw the ball with the best of them, and that\u2019s a great starting point to have.\u201d<\/p>\n
The ending point is murky, to say the least. The biggest question for now is whether Rodgers will be back.
