Minnesota\u2019s cornerback depth and quarterback hierarchy are both worth watching as May football business begins.<\/p>\n

This week focuses on cornerbacks and the NFL\u2019s take on the top roster battle around business.<\/p>\n

Minnesota\u2019s May Rumor Mill Starts with Two Familiar Pressure Points<\/p>\n

The Purple Rumor Mill for May 9th, 2026.<\/p>\n

Rumor: Rasul Douglas, a free-agent cornerback, should be on the Vikings\u2019 radar.<\/p>\n

Pro Football Network\u2019s Jacob Infante detailed the NFL\u2019s best 25 free agents<\/a> this week, with Douglas making the cut at No. 10.<\/p>\n

He noted Douglas\u2019 free agency and\u00a0linked him to Minnesota<\/a>, \u201cThe Dolphins needed a stopgap starting option at cornerback last year, and Rasul Douglas filled that role admirably. He had two interceptions and ranked No. 15 in the league in PFSN\u2019s CB Impact Scoring at 84.3.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019ll be 31 in August, so he\u2019s hardly a long-term solution for any team, but he should get the chance to battle for a starting role. 2026 Predicted Team: Minnesota Vikings.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the spring and summer of 2025, fans actually had Douglas on their free-agent wishlists, but Minnesota settled for Jeff Okudah<\/a> as their third cornerback. The move proved unsuccessful: Okudah struggled early and sustained a season-ending injury after just six largely ineffective games.<\/p>\n

While acquiring Douglas still seems appealing on paper, the Vikings\u2019 current cornerback situation<\/a> is significantly improved from last year, as the front office bolstered depth by signing veteran James Pierre<\/a> in March and drafting Charles Demmings in April.<\/p>\n

Therefore, unless training camp reveals unexpected issues or the team aims for an unusually deep cornerback rotation, Douglas doesn\u2019t appear to be a necessity. Last season, Brian Flores demonstrated his ability to make the defense effective by fielding three or four capable corners, supported by his flexible and innovative scheme.<\/p>\n

Rumor: Unsigned Vikings cornerback Fabian Moreau<\/a> would fit well in Miami<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Then, the same guy at PFSN connected<\/a> Moreau to the Dolphins: \u201cFabian Moreau has bounced around to five different teams in his last six seasons, though he\u2019s coming off two consecutive seasons as a backup cornerback for the Vikings.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreau hasn\u2019t found much traction in free agency this offseason. Perhaps the Dolphins will snap the drought.<\/p>\n

These are the Dolphins\u2019 cornerbacks heading into the summer:<\/p>\n

That is an awful group compared to other NFL squads. If Moreau wants playing time, Infante is correct: Miami\u2019s secondary is screaming for depth.<\/p>\n

Rumor: Kyler Murray<\/a> v. J.J. McCarthy<\/a> is the top roster battle in the NFL this summer.<\/p>\n

Eva Geitheim sized up the top questions in the league after the draft, and the Vikings\u2019 quarterback situation was mentioned.<\/p>\n

She explained<\/a>, \u201cWho will start for the Vikings come Week 1? There will be several quarterback competitions across the league this offseason, but none will be bigger than that between Kyler Murray and J.J. McCarthy<\/a>. The Vikings could be a playoff contender with competent quarterback play, a key reason they brought Murray to Minnesota.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe competition could certainly go in Murray\u2019s favor, as both coach\u00a0Kevin O\u2019Connell<\/a>\u00a0and receiver Justin Jefferson<\/a> have spoken highly of the veteran quarterback while emphasizing the work McCarthy still has ahead of him.\u201d<\/p>\n

\"J.J.<\/p>\n

On paper, McCarthy presents a compelling case in a quarterback battle. As the Vikings\u2019 starting quarterback in 2025 \u2014 his second full season after a torn meniscus derailed his rookie year \u2014 he certainly warrants an opportunity to compete.<\/p>\n

But McCarthy has quickly developed a troubling injury history. Plagued by a torn meniscus, a high ankle sprain, a concussion, and a broken hand, he has started only 10 games in two years. Despite being a 1st-Round pick, he has been available for roughly 27% of Minnesota\u2019s games, a concerning statistic for a quarterback once envisioned to stabilize the franchise.<\/p>\n

Too, McCarthy\u2019s on-field performance has been underwhelming. Last season, he ranked near the bottom of the league in QB efficiency and threw more interceptions than touchdowns. While he remains an option for the QB1 role, Murray is the clear frontrunner.<\/p>\n

Adding to the challenge for McCarthy, Murray arrives with stick-it-to-them motivation. Arizona<\/a> effectively abandoned him this offseason, a move consistent with a franchise known for one of the league\u2019s shakiest ownership groups. The Cardinals cut him in favor of Jacoby Brissett<\/a> and Carson Beck<\/a>, undoubtedly leaving Murray with a chip on his shoulder.<\/p>\n

Murray\u2019s heightened motivation further complicates McCarthy\u2019s chances of an upset.
