The Los Angeles Chargers<\/a> showed their belief in wide receiver Quentin Johnston<\/a> when the franchise exercised his fifth-year option on April 28. The move will keep Johnston under contract with the Chargers for the next two seasons.<\/p>\n

Johnston has shined for the Chargers in the last two seasons, totaling 106 receptions for 1,446 yards and 16 touchdown across the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Now, Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel wants Johnston to be even better in 2026.<\/p>\n

McDaniel compared Johnston to two star players he previously coached: former Tennessee Titans<\/a> wide receiver Andre Johnson<\/a> and former Atlanta Falcons<\/a> wide receiver Julio Jones<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s a guy that has some traits in his game that are similar to some very powerful, explosive, productive receivers that I\u2019ve had in the past,\u201d McDaniel said of Johnston, per The Athletic.<\/a> \u201cNamely, like Julio and Andre.\u201d<\/p>\n

Johnson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024. Meanwhile, Jones was a 2010s All-Decade team selection and is expected to be inducted into the Hall of Fame as early as 2029.<\/p>\n

McDaniel Has High Expectations For Entire WR Room<\/p>\n

In addition to Johnston, McDaniel has high expectations for the entire Chargers wide receiver room. McDaniel told reporters he wants all of the wide receivers to set new career-highs this season.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a reasonable expectation to exceed whatever their career highs are across the board in that room,\u201d McDaniel said, per The Athletic<\/a>. \u201cI think there\u2019s a lot of untapped potential just in a lot of their skill sets across the board.\u201d<\/p>\n

Los Angeles<\/a> will have Johnston, Ladd McConkey<\/a>, Tre\u2019 Harris<\/a>, KeAndre Lambert-Smith<\/a> and Derius Davis<\/a> returning next season. The Chargers also drafted wide receiver Brenen Thompson in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft.<\/p>\n
