The Washington Commanders<\/a> would be wise to add more depth to their secondary ahead of the 2026 campaign.<\/p>\n

While Washington has a promising young cornerback in Trey Amos<\/a>, he’s also coming off a season in which he suffered a broken fibula<\/a> in Week 10.<\/p>\n

At the other boundary spot, Mike Sainristil has shown promise<\/a>, but he has hardly cemented himself as a locked-in long-term solution.<\/p>\n

With questions surrounding Sainristil, Amos, and the team’s depth at cornerback, and with the Commanders fresh off a season in which they gave up the fifth-most passing yards per game, Washington should be looking for as many potential insurance policies as possible.<\/p>\n

Commanders named top landing spot for Trevon Diggs<\/a><\/p>\n

In an article listing the top free-agent landing spots for former Dallas Cowboys<\/a> star cornerback Trevon Diggs, Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors<\/a> listed the Commanders as one of them.<\/p>\n

Washington\u2019s secondary has been a pain point the last two years, as Quinn is still seeking to recapture the level of success he had with the Cowboys on that side of the ball. They\u2019ve invested recent second-round picks into\u00a0Mike Sainristil\u00a0and\u00a0Trey Amos\u00a0while also adding\u00a0Amik Robertson<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Ahkello Witherspoon<\/a>\u00a0as free agents. The current hope is that the veterans provide enough of a floor to bank on the young options like Sainristil and Amos taking a leap forward.<\/p>\n

Behind those four, the depth is rough. Diggs is a huge wildcard at this point in his career but his familiarity with Quinn, track record when healthy and the fact that he\u2019d likely be available for the veteran minimum are all factors that should make him a consideration for Washington, especially if injuries thin the room even further in August or September.<\/p>\n

Diggs looked like a locked-in star at one point in his career.<\/p>\n

Diggs took the league by storm in 2021, notching 11 interceptions en route to a Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro nod. He then followed that up with another Pro Bowl campaign in 2022.<\/p>\n

After getting a huge deal from the Cowboys<\/a>, the injuries started rolling in for Diggs and the veteran simply couldn’t return to form when he was healthy.<\/p>\n

The Cowboys decided enough was enough in 2025, when they released Diggs<\/a>, who was then acquired by the Green Bay Packers<\/a>. A new home did nothing to change Diggs’ downward trajectory, though.<\/p>\n

Will Diggs be the kind of valuable depth the Commanders are looking for?<\/p>\n

Nobody can say for sure, and chances are he won’t be after how poorly he has played in recent years.<\/p>\n

But considering the uncertainty at cornerback the Commanders have, it wouldn’t hurt to at least take a veteran’s minimum flyer on Diggs to see what he’s got left.<\/p>\n
