He included Jackson in a broader look at what the 2027 offseason quarterback carousel could look like. While Jackson remains under contract through 2027, Fowler’s reporting suggests Baltimore’s next negotiation may not begin in earnest until other quarterback dominoes start falling.

Is it possible that movement in the QB market could restart Ravens-Lamar Jackson negotiations?

It’s certainly that time of the year. Contracts, the NFL schedule, and offseason workouts certainly dominate the discussion. In Baltimore, there’s another conversation moving the needle. Lamar Jackson couldn’t possibly hit the free-agent market, could he?

The entire Ravens organization has been very vocal, especially head coach Jesse Minter and general manager Eric DeCosta. They are excited about what Jackson brings to the Ravens for the long term. Both want him to return.

Still, on the surface, it appears as though discussions have stalled. Sure, there’s a chance that work is being done behind the curtain, but there are also theories that Lamar Jackson isn’t in any rush.

“If the past negotiation is any indication, Jackson is totally comfortable waiting things out. After prolonged contract negotiations entering the 2023 season, Jackson requested a trade before the sides eventually agreed on a five-year, $260 million deal. Jackson is slated to be a free agent in March 2028 and has a clause in his contract that prevents the Ravens from placing the franchise tag on him.”

Folwer also believes the situations involving Baker Mayfield (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) and C.J. Stroud (Houston Texans) could indirectly shape Baltimore’s approach with Jackson. That logic makes perfect sense. Quarterback contracts rarely exist in isolation. Every major extension recalibrates leverage, expectations, and market benchmarks.

If Mayfield or Stroud lands a new deal, especially a lucrative one, Jackson’s side immediately gains fresh data points. If history tells us anything, Fowler might be right. One can argue that Jackson might have zero problem with waiting.

“After prolonged contract negotiations entering the 2023 season, Jackson requested a trade before the sides eventually agreed on a five-year, $260 million deal. Jackson is slated to be a free agent in March 2028 and has a clause in his contract that prevents the Ravens from placing the franchise tag on him… ‘Last time [in 2023] it seemed like talks were going nowhere and then a deal seemed to pop out suddenly,’ said an NFC executive of Jackson. ‘This one has a chance to get really interesting again, especially if he has a big year and ups his leverage.'”

Fowler also states the Texans have been wholly supportive of Stroud, and the Houston star is eyeing a big fourth season. The team has decided to pay others first, however, including defensive stalwarts Will Anderson Jr. and Azeez Al-Shaair. If Jackson thrives under Jesse Minter’s new era, maintains MVP-level play, and pushes Baltimore deep into January, his leverage only grows stronger. He has already proven willing to bet on himself once. Would anyone really doubt him doing so again?

For now, all of this remains theoretical. Still, Ravens fans would be wise to monitor quarterback extensions elsewhere because Baltimore’s next Lamar Jackson conversation may begin long before anyone expected. The good news for Baltimore is that Lamar Jackson still appears exactly where the franchise wants him. The bad news is that every elite performance makes it even more expensive to keep him.

This article originally appeared on Ravens Wire: Ravens’ negotiations with Lamar Jackson may hinge on two QB dominoes

Conversations about Lamar Jackson’s contract future never truly disappear.
