Arguably for the first time in his career \u2014 2024 could have been different if not for summer injuries \u2014 Minnesota Vikings<\/a> wide receiver Justin Jefferson<\/a> expects a real quarterback camp battle<\/a> in Eagan. The Vikings will evidently host one, and Jefferson says let the best man win.<\/p>\n

Minnesota\u2019s top playmaker wants stability, leadership, and a real answer before the regular season arrives.<\/p>\n

Kyler Murray<\/a> and J.J. McCarthy<\/a> will duke it out this summer. Jefferson\u2019s ready.<\/p>\n

Jefferson\u2019s Wish Adds Pressure to Vikings Training Camp<\/p>\n

Murray will probably win the thing, but it\u2019s not a coronation just yet.<\/p>\n

Jefferson on the Training Camp Battle<\/p>\n

Jefferson was asked about the Vikings\u2019 impending quarterback competition on Good Morning Football last week. He opined<\/a>, \u201cJust competition, for real. Just to see, who\u2019s gonna be that last man standing? Who\u2019s gonna be that dawg? Who\u2019s gonna be that leader to carry us throughout the season? Because that is definitely a missing piece that we\u2019re looking for and something that is very important to our team, which is the quarterback spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJust seeing that competition battle, seeing those guys come in every day leading the team and try to spark especially the offense, it\u2019s definitely something I\u2019m looking forward to. And just going out there and connecting with any quarterback that\u2019s throwing the ball, that\u2019s the main important thing this training camp.\u201d<\/p>\n

On having a long-term franchise quarterback, he mused, \u201cThat\u2019s definitely something that is\u2026 I want that, for sure. It\u2019s definitely difficult for those types of things to happen. But just like me being with Kirk Cousins<\/a> for those first four years of my career, just building on that connection, building on that relationship, that\u2019s something that is unbroken, that\u2019s something you just don\u2019t find just anywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt definitely will be great to have a quarterback, the same quarterback for these next couple years going down the line, but you already know that\u2019s something difficult to do in this league. But for sure, to keep knowing that quarterback for these next couple years and build that relationship and create that spark, that\u2019s definitely the plan.\u201d<\/p>\n

No Such Battle Last Year<\/p>\n

In 2024, the Vikings flirted with a summer quarterback competition between McCarthy and Sam Darnold<\/a>, but that scenario was upended by McCarthy\u2019s untimely meniscus tear, which sidelined him for a full season. Other than that, Jefferson has never witnessed a true quarterback battle in July and August.<\/p>\n

This time, he will get it.<\/p>\n

Minnesota crowned McCarthy as its QB1 in 2025, brushing aside Darnold, Daniel Jones<\/a>, and Aaron Rodgers<\/a> as options to compete with McCarthy. Throughout the 2025 offseason, it was just assumed that McCarthy would be the QB1. It\u2019s different in 2026.<\/p>\n

USA Today\u2018s Jacob Camenker on the 2026 battle<\/a>: \u201cMurray only signed with the Vikings to a one-year, veteran minimum contract. If he emerges as the top option for Minnesota, the team will likely need to sign him to a lucrative, long-term extension.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMeanwhile, McCarthy is in the third season of his four-year rookie contract, so he will be cost-controlled through the 2027 campaign. The Vikings will also have to decide whether to accept the Michigan product\u2019s fifth-year option after the 2026 season.\u201d<\/p>\n

Murray as the Favorite<\/p>\n

Make no mistake, though. Murray is the heavy frontrunner to win the battle. Per sportsbooks, he enters the summer with a -1,000 moneyline, similar odds to an NFL kicker hitting a 25-yard field goal. The Vikings will advertise \u201cmay the best man win\u201d at training camp and in the preseason, but in reality, the position may be Murray\u2019s to lose.<\/p>\n

Murray also has a quasi-extensive injury history, missing 26% of career starts since 2019. McCarthy is not the beacon of pristine health \u2014 his injury resume is already scarier than Murray\u2019s \u2014 but if either man were to get hurt this summer, well, the other guy would be called upon for duty.<\/p>\n

A safe rule of thumb for May, June, July, August, and September: Murray will probably be the Vikings\u2019 QB1 in 2026, even if Jefferson is stoked for a quarterback battle.<\/p>\n

If Murray and McCarthy get hurt, veteran Carson Wentz<\/a> is back on the roster as the QB3.<\/p>\n

Other Camp Battles<\/p>\n

Murray vs. McCarthy isn\u2019t the only roster battle afoot. A May viewpoint tentatively uplifts these competitions in Minnesota:<\/p>\n
