Alvin Kamara and Nick Chubb are in the Cowboys rumor mill.

Nick Chubb is easy to connect to Dallas because of the Brian Schottenheimer angle. Anytime a head coach has coached a player in a past stop, this time being the University of Georgia, the noise is a little louder.

Chubb is a physical runner, Schottenheimer wants Dallas to be tougher and the Cowboys could still use another reliable back in the room.

Then there is Alvin Kamara.

Kamara’s name is floating around because he could become a post-June 1 cut for the New Orleans Saints. If that happens, I would not be shocked one bit if the Cowboys at least kicked the tires.

On paper, it makes sense. Dallas could add a proven veteran with receiving ability, give Dak Prescott another outlet, and create a more flexible backfield.

But this is where I have to slow down.

The Cowboys already have Javonte Williams, and they drafted Jaydon Blue last season. So this is not just about whether Chubb and Kamara can still play. It’s about whether either one actually fits the room without getting in the way.

Nick Chubb Fits the Cowboys’ Physical Identity

I get the Chubb talk. If Dallas wants to build a tougher run game under Schottenheimer, Chubb is the kind of back people picture. He runs behind his pads, doesn’t dance around in the backfield, and when he sees daylight he gets north.

Even in 2025, Chubb still showed he has some useful football left. He carried the ball 122 times for 506 yards, averaged 4.1 yards per carry, scored three touchdowns, and posted a 74.6 run grade. He also forced 25 missed tackles and had 328 yards after contact.

This is not prime Nick Chubb, but he’s not completely washed up yet.

If the Cowboys wanted a veteran hammer who could help in short-yardage situations, protect the offense from injuries and bring some more toughness to the room, Chubb makes sense.

But here is the problem.

Nick Chubb Overlaps Too Much with Javonte Williams

Javonte Williams already gives Dallas a Physical veteran back.

That’s why the Chubb fit gets muddy. Nick Chubb and Javonte Williams are not the exact same player, but they are pulling from the same bucket. Both are downhill backs, contact runners, who are better suited for early-down work than being true passing-game weapons.

So if Dallas signs Chubb, what happens?

Javonte gets carries and Chubb gets carries. Then Jaydon Blue is just sitting there waiting on scraps. I don’t like that.

The Cowboys drafted Blue because he brings electricity. He gives the Cowboys a young back with speed, burst, and upside. If Dallas adds Chubb, it needs to be as an insurance policy, not as a roadblock.

Nick Chubb could work as RB3, but even then, him being a short yardage specialist still gets into Javonte Williams territory.

Alvin Kamara Is a Different Kind of Fit

Alvin Kamara is the more interesting fit because he gives Dallas a different look.

Javonte Williams can be the physical back. Jaydon Blue can be the speed back, and Kamara can be the receiving back.

That is a cleaner skill-set fit than Chubb.

Kamara’s 2025 rushing numbers were not pretty. He had 131 carries for 471 yards, averaged 3.6 yards per carry, and scored only one rushing touchdown.

That’s not a lead-back profile, but it has been a few years since he was a lead back.

The receiving stats are why his name still matters. Kamara had 39 targets, 33 catches, and 186 receiving yards. All his stats were in 11 games.

That tells me he can still be useful as a checkdown option. He may not be the old Kamara, but he can still catch the ball and create something after the catch.

Kamara Has Red Flags Too

The fit is cleaner, but not perfect.

Kamara’s receiving production didn’t have efficiency. His 0.78 yards per route run is not what you want from a receiving back. He was also terrible at pass blocking.

I think all this matters because if Dallas were to sign Kamara, it would just be for passing down work. If his receiving and pass protection are slipping, then what exactly are the Cowboys paying for?

Alvin Kamara makes more sense than Chubb from a roster-fit standpoint because he compliments Javonte Williams instead of copying him, but if the Cowboys are just paying for the name they are asking for trouble.

The Cowboys Cannot Bury Jaydon Blue

This is where I plant my flag.

The Cowboys should not block Jaydon Blue before he gets a real shot. That young man has the kind of speed Dallas needs in this backfield.

Blue gives the offense something different. He can stress angles, make linebackers run, and turn a crease into a chunk play.

Dallas has spent too many years talking about adding some juice, then turning around and leaning on safer veteran names.

At some point, you have to let the young dogs eat.

I’m not saying Jaydon Blue needs to be handed anything, but he does need a real chance to compete for the running back role behind Javonte Williams.

If Chubb or Kamara can come in and help the room without blocking Blue, fine.

If the Cowboys were to bring either one in and automatically move them ahead of Blue without a competition, I’m out.

Was this helpful?

Thanks for your feedback!

The Dallas Cowboys running back rumors are starting to heat up, and I understand why.
