No, the Houston Texans <\/a>don’t need another tight end entering OTAs.<\/p>\n

Houston extended standout Dalton Schultz <\/a>this offseason after the veteran broke the single-season receptions record for tight ends last fall as C.J. Stroud’s<\/a> No. 2 target. The Texans<\/a> also added New Orleans Saints blocking option Foster Moreau<\/a> and drafted Michigan’s Marlin Klein <\/a>in the second round.<\/p>\n

If nothing else, Houston also has both Brevin Jordan<\/a> and Cade Stover<\/a> coming off injuries, but they should be considered options to make the active roster. So, would that stop Nick Caserio from adding another name?<\/p>\n

Fox Sports’ Ben Arthur <\/a>recently released his eight favorite destinations for the top free agents left on the market. For the Texans, even after adding two new names to the tight end room, former Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a>‘ Jonnu Smith<\/a> could be a nice and welcome addition to the crew<\/a>.<\/p>\n

“The Texans don\u2019t have a reliable pass-catching tight end behind starter Dalton Schultz, so that\u2019s a void Smith can fill,” Arthur wrote. “Houston offensive coordinator Nick Caley was also Smith\u2019s position coach with the Patriots<\/a> from 2021-22.”<\/p>\n

Smith, who spent two seasons with Caley in New England<\/a>, is coming off a down season in Pittsburgh as the No. 2 tight end. Despite being active for all 17 games and in an offense led by his former offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Jonnu Smith still only managed to average 5.5 yards per reception. He also caught just 38 passes for 222 yards and a pair of scores.<\/p>\n

Yes, Houston could target another tight end, but the Texans would have to be sold on the idea that either Klein isn’t ready for meaningful reps at the professional level or that Stover and Jordan aren’t a part of the long-term roster plans.<\/p>\n

While he’s not elite in the run-blocking stage, Smith is a willing contributor to add volume to any offense. Last season, he saw over 52% of snaps in the Steelers’, mostly filling in on 12-personnel moves opposite Pat Freiermuth<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Right now, it seems unlikely that Smith will sign in Houston, but anything could change ahead of Week 1 when the Buffalo Bills<\/a> arrive at Reliant Stadium. In just terms of fit, there’s a reason why one could put the tea leaves together for a conversation between the two sides.<\/p>\n
