With the completion of rookie minicamp a few weeks ago, and the first team OTAs scheduled for this week, May 27-29, it feels like a good time to review the full offseason depth chart. The Washington Commanders<\/a> officially announced the signing of 9 undrafted college free agents<\/a> and the return of CB Antonio Hamilton<\/a> to bring the offseason roster to 91 players.<\/p>\n

That number includes T.J. Maguranyaanga, a former rugby player who joined the Washington roster via the International Player Pathway program last year.<\/p>\n

While Adam Peters will undoubtedly continue working to enhance the roster, we now have a pretty complete picture of this year\u2019s training camp roster.<\/p>\n

The numbers that appear beside some players\u2019 names are 2025 cap hits per Over the Cap. I have not included cap hits below $1.5m.<\/p>\n

The Commanders currently have 44 defensive players, 43 offensive players and 4 special teams players.<\/p>\n

Please note that assigned positions are my own personal opinions; they do not necessarily represent the thinking of Washington\u2019s coaches or front office, nor are they necessarily consistent with fan consensus, or the thoughts of other writers on Hogs Haven. Finally, when it comes to backup players, I don\u2019t put much effort into making sure that they are on the right or left or behind the specific player that they backup. I mostly just try to fit everyone on the chart efficiently.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also probably worth noting that my goal is primarily to illustrate the full offseason roster, not to create a conventional depth chart. I have, for example, 12 positions on offense and 13 on defense. Readers can project 11 or 12 personnel (or whatever else) on offense, as well as multiple defensive alignments.<\/p>\n

Wide receiver<\/p>\n

I continue to list drafted rookie Antonio Williams<\/a> at the \u2018z\u2019 receiver instead of the slot for reasons discussed previously. In addition to the fact that the team already has two young slot receivers in Luke McCaffrey<\/a> and Jaylin Lane<\/a>, GM Adam Peters\u2019 comments about Williams<\/a> in a draft-week press conference focused almost exclusively on Williams\u2019 2024 season and his abilities playing outside, mentioning his ability to play the slot as \u2018flexibility\u2019. At the moment, the Commanders have other options at slot receiver, but lack of a clear starter opposite Terry McLaurin<\/a>. Based on the general manager\u2019s comments, I think he believes he has drafted a player who can fill that role \u2014 at least unless\/until the team acquires a player better suited to the role.<\/p>\n

Running back<\/p>\n

The RB position group should offer fascinating camp competition this year with 6th-round rookie Kaytron Allen<\/a> and last year\u2019s 7th-round pick, Bill Croskey-Merritt, appearing to be the top two battlers for the starting role, with veteran free agent Rachaad White<\/a> seemingly starting out ahead of Jeremy McNichols<\/a> as the primary 3rd-down back. Veteran free agent Jerome Ford<\/a> and UDFA Robert Henry round out a 6-man group with limited name recognition or star power \u2014 a group in which an argument can be made for each of the 6 backs to make the 53-man roster.<\/p>\n

Cornerback<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not sure if anything is certain with this group outside of Trey Amos<\/a> as one of the starters. I have listed Mikey Sainristil as the opposite starter, with Amik Robertson<\/a> as the \u2018starting\u2019 slot corner, backed up by safety Quan Martin<\/a>. This is the group that seems to have the most question marks coming out of the draft.<\/p>\n

DL\/Edge<\/p>\n

Washington entered the 2025 season with the most questions at the DE position. Along with a new defensive coordinator and an expected shift to more 3-man fronts, the Commanders have substantially re-tooled the defensive line and edge positions. While some familiar names remain, many of the players on the defensive line are new, and the way they will be deployed is likely to be very different from what Commanders fans saw under Joe Whitt.<\/p>\n

Linebacker<\/p>\n

I have 3 inside linebackers positions shown. Of course, in 3-4 alignments which are expected to predominate this season, only 2 ILBs would be on the field. In my mind, rookie Sonny Styles<\/a> and veteran free agent Leo Chenal<\/a> are the starters, but I have listed Frankie Luvu<\/a> as the top choice for LB3. In reality, I think he will back up Chenal and be used as a rotational player in 2026.<\/p>\n

In any event, a lot of the fun between now and the start of the season will be watching the training camp battles that will answer most of the current roster questions.<\/p>\n

We won\u2019t have to wait for training camp for the process to begin, however. The offseason conditioning program for veterans began on April 20th and rookie minicamp took place a little a few weeks ago. As mentioned above, the first Organized Team Activities (OTAs) are scheduled for this week. Here is the full offseason schedule:<\/p>\n

OTA Offseason Workouts: May 27-29, June 2-4, June 9-11<\/p>\n

Mandatory Minicamp: June 16-18<\/p>\n

Training Camp: July-August (specific dates TBA)<\/p>\n

Salary Cap Update<\/p>\n

Over the Cap<\/a> currently estimates the 2026 available cap space for the Commanders to be $43.7m, which is the 4th most in the league. This amount is sufficient to sign any veteran player(s) they may want to add before training camp.<\/p>\n

Projections for 2027
Unlike the last two seasons, which saw massive roster turnover and heavy reliance on one-year contracts, Over the Cap currently projects<\/a> the Commanders to finish the 2026 season with 45 players under contract. This compares to a mid-May projection last year of just 29 veteran players & 6 draft picks (35 total players) expected to be under contract at the end of the 2026.<\/p>\n

Similar to the past couple of seasons, the Commanders are currently projected to enter the \u201827 offseason with around $64m in cap space \u2014 but also with the expectation that Jayden Daniels<\/a>, who is playing his 3rd NFL season in 2026, will be a prime candidate for a massive contract extension<\/a> that locks him up as the franchise quarterback for the foreseeable future.<\/p>\n

Washington Commanders 2027 draft picks\"\"<\/p>\n

Washington has all 7 of their own draft picks in hand for the 2027 draft, with one in each round.
