He was a three-star prospect and earned Regional Player of the Year honors after accumulating over 4,000 yards of offense and accounting for 44 touchdowns during his senior season. He was also a finalist for the state’s Mr. Football award, as well.

After arriving at Toledo, Smith saw playing time immediately as a true freshman in 2022. He appeared in 11 games and recorded 12 tackles with two tackles for loss. In 2023, he remained a backup played recorded a career-high 15 tackles while seeing time in all 14 games.

In his junior season, Smith was named Second-Team All-MAC after breaking up 16 passes (second in the nation) and snatching two interceptions while posting 58 total tackles (sixth on the team). He doubled up on Second-Team All-MAC honors as a senior in 2025 with 11 more pass breakups and a third career interception.

Smith would go undrafted in the 2026 draft before signing on with the Chargers.

The Good

Smith was a productive cornerback for the Rockets during his two seasons as a starter from 2024-2025 where he totaled 27 pass breakups and a trio of interceptions.

While playing in a backup role, Smith had the opportunity to learn from future first-rounder Quinyon Mitchell who has been wildly successful as a member of the Eagles. That mentorship seemed to have paid off with the massive jump in play and production for Smith during the two years following Mitchell’s jump to the NFL.

Overall, Smith wins with a high football IQ and steady understanding of the nuances that come with playing cornerback.

The Bad

Smith fell out of the draft’s seven rounds due to a lack of ideal length and top-end speed. No one physical attribute stands out but production is production. That tends to translate no matter what the physical shortcomings are.

He also tends to miss far too many tackles which is worrisome for a player who will likely see most of his snaps closer to the box.

2026 Outlook

I believe Smith has one of the best chances of making the final roster out of the UDFA haul thanks to his natural ability to find the ball despite lacking in length and speed. The Chargers need a true slot cornerback to help solidify their rotation on the outside and there’s truly a place for Smith if he can compete with the promising UDFAs from the 2025 group.

Next up in our 90-in-90 series is cornerback Avery Smith!
