{"id":909526,"date":"2026-06-04T06:18:40","date_gmt":"2026-06-04T06:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/909526\/"},"modified":"2026-06-04T06:18:40","modified_gmt":"2026-06-04T06:18:40","slug":"jacksonville-bold-for-6-3-26-join-the-crowd","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/909526\/","title":{"rendered":"Jacksonville Bold for 6.3.26: Join the crowd"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Democrats in Northeast Florida are opening campaign accounts for state House races ahead of qualifying week, which runs from June 8 through June 12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Some of the new candidacies will create crowded Primaries for seats Democrats are almost certain to win.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Others are bids for less-likely pickups currently held by Republicans and will likely lead to close elections in August and to large resource gaps between Democratic insurgents and entrenched GOP incumbents in November.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Crowded-Jacksonville-Races.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-799942\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Crowded-Jacksonville-Races-640x353.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"353\"  \/><\/a>New Democratic filings are reshaping Northeast Florida House races ahead of qualifying week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In HD 11, House Speaker-designate <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/773062-from-freshman-during-covid-to-future-speaker-sam-garrisons-steady-climb\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Sam Garrison<\/a> initially had a speed-bump Primary opponent in the underfunded Antoinette Harmon, but Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/candidates\/CanDetail.asp?account=90854\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Marci Marie White<\/a> is now also running. He has more than $3.3 million cash on hand between his campaign account and the \u201cHonest Leadership\u201d political committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In HD 13, four Democrats are now running to replace departing Angie Nixon, including former Senate Democratic Leader Audrey Gibson and former state House hopeful Leslie Scott Jean-Bart. Political newcomers Brandon Groover and Christopher Thomas are also in the mix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This could end up being an open Primary unless a random NPA candidate materializes to close it to Democrats, as so often happens in these races without consequence because mainstream media doesn\u2019t bother paying attention to them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">HD 14 incumbent Kimberly Daniels will face a Primary challenge again. This time around, it\u2019s Elgin Foreman, Jr. He volunteers with the Northside Coalition of Jacksonville.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In HD 15, Rep. Dean Black has no Republican competition for renomination. However, Democratic competition has emerged here, too, with Christopher Lloyd \u201cVan\u201d Cima running.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former state House candidate Lloyd Caulker is also in the mix, as is Chadd Charland. Both are running as NPAs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In HD 16, Republican incumbent Kiyan Michael\u2019s Democratic challenger is Eli Johnson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two Democrats, Heather Smith and Art Stresing, are challenging Rep. Kim Kendall in HD 18. Democrats Suzanne Pavelle and Lee Butler are challenging Reps. Governor is on the cusp of becoming the newest U.S. Ambassador to Trinidad and Tobago.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">President Donald Trump announced this week that he wants Jennifer Johnson-Carroll to oversee the diplomatic post. Johnson-Carroll is a Trinidadian American with ancestral roots in the island nation. The Republican was elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 2003, replacing another entrenched Republican, Mike Hogan, who resigned from the post. She served in the HD 13 seat until 2010.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Former Gov. Rick Scott and now U.S. Senator, elevated Johnson-Carroll to Lt. Governor in 2011 as she was his running mate in the 2010 campaign. Wyman Duggan in House District 12.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The August election, which is countywide since Freeman is one of five at-large members of the Council, will be open to all voters, since Jacksonville\u2019s local Primaries are nonpartisan. If one candidate gets a majority, the election is decided; otherwise, the top two face off during the November General Election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Three candidates were running for Freeman\u2019s seat in the 2027 General Election.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753281-deborah-wesley-scores-10-incumbent-endorsements-for-jax-city-council-bid\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Deborah Wesley<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxsheriff.org\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jacksonville Sheriff\u2019s Office<\/a> Commander, is the choice of 10 current members of the City Council. She has raised nearly $80,000 as of the end of March.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Libertarian Addison Jade Patrick has raised nearly $500. Independent Nancy Quinones has yet to report fundraising.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Those looking to qualify by petition will need 1,855 signatures. Otherwise, they will have to pay $3,408 if they are members of a party or $2,272.16 if unaligned.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Qualifying runs from noon on June 11 to noon the next day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Freeman is well-positioned for his Primary. He has raised nearly $445,000 combined between his campaign account and his political committee, For the Future We Want.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In Q1 of this year, he brought in more than $43,000 through his campaign account and an additional $38,500 through his PC.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He is currently unopposed in the HD 12 race.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both sides now<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville Mayor <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/791060-deegan-files-for-reelection\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Donna Deegan<\/a> is showing strength and bipartisan support in one of her first major fundraisers for her 2027 re-election campaign.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The high-powered host committee for Thursday\u2019s event in Riverside included several major players who have previously contributed large sums to Republicans.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Donna-Deegan-fundraising-image-via-Jacksonville-today.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-799963\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Donna-Deegan-fundraising-image-via-Jacksonville-today-640x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>Donna Deegan draws bipartisan backing for an early 2027 re-election fundraiser. Ron DeSantis ally <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/742529-desantis-mori-ridley-uf\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Mori Hosseini<\/a>, Jacksonville Jaguars owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaguars.com\/video\/how-stadium-of-the-future-deal-impacts-the-jaguars-and-jacksonville-w-shad-khan-and-donna-deegan\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Shad Khan<\/a> (who helped to fund President Donald Trump\u2019s first inauguration), and Tampa Bay Rays co-owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/eog\/news\/press\/2023\/governor-ron-desantis-appoints-patrick-zalupski-university-florida-board-trustees\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Patrick Zalupski<\/a>. Zalupski is another DeSantis ally who, like Hosseini, is on the University of Florida Board of Trustees.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Hosseini was a major proponent of the University of Florida campus that came to Jacksonville. Khan derived benefit from the public-private partnership that funds stadium renovations. And Zalupski\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/investors.dreamfindershomes.com\/corporate-governance\/board-of-directors\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Dream Finders<\/a> Homes has been highly active in the local and state political process.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Other names historically associated with Republican political causes are also on the host committee, including JEA Board member John Baker, Ambassador John Rood,\u00a0Kerri Stewart, real estate developer Andy Allen, and former Trump aide Omarosa Manigault Newman.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m grateful to receive the support of business leaders from across the political spectrum. I appreciate their support of my leadership and all the progress we\u2019re making in Jacksonville,\u201d Deegan exclusively told Florida Politics on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Though the formal campaign is just beginning, <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/789580-donna-deegan-committee-nears-1-5m-cash-on-hand-after-203k-quarter\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Deegan has already begun fundraising<\/a>. The aligned <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=84640\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Duval for All<\/a> political committee has raised more than $1.62 million and has spent less than $177,000.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No serious opposition has filed for the former newscaster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Nick of time<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.gov\/city-council\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jacksonville City Council<\/a> is elevating Vice President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jacksonville.gov\/city-council\/city-council-members\/al3\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Nick Howland<\/a> to President in July. It has selected Joe Carlucci as the next Vice President after a spirited campaign for the job, which is generally a springboard to the top.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howland, a Navy veteran who represents at-large Group 3, was first elected in a 2022 Special Election. He\u2019s running again in 2027 and has more than $320,000 banked for his re-election bid.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Howland-copy-Large.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-788539\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/Howland-copy-Large-640x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>Nick Howland prepares to lead the Jacksonville City Council in July.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During his year leading the Council, Howland vowed to focus on public safety, infrastructure, making Jacksonville attractive to businesses without using taxpayer dollars, and giving Citizen Planning Advisory Committees a \u201cseat at the table\u201d to give neighborhoods a stronger voice.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howland also wanted the Council to work \u201cas a team,\u201d even though it\u2019s an election year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Howland\u2019s nomination was uncontested. Half the apartments will be dedicated to active-duty service members and veterans, with 5% reserved for veterans experiencing homelessness. A second phase could add 99 more units, bringing the total planned community to 243 homes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Giving berth<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville\u2019s Blount Island port terminal is nearing completion of a much larger transportation facility for importing and exporting vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxport.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">JAXPORT<\/a> announced this week that construction has reached the halfway mark on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jaxport.com\/cargo\/facilities\/blount-island-marine-terminal\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Blount Island Marine Terminal<\/a>, designed to increase the capacity of vehicle cargo ships coming to the First Coast. Berth 22 at the facility already manages vessels up to 750 feet in length.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Crossroad crashing<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville drivers keep making the wrong choices at the right-of-way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A new study by <a href=\"https:\/\/kuzyklaw.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Kuzyk Personal Injury &amp; Car Accident Lawyers<\/a> examined accident data over a decade and found that the First Coast metropolitan area ranked <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1LGSDvAra0ixPvA6cUBj2QqMrnh6b5b7E\/edit\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">fifth in the U.S.<\/a> among 100 cities analyzed for intersection crashes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/No-fault-auto-insurance.jpeg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-729026\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rawchili.com\/nfl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/06\/No-fault-auto-insurance-640x427.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"  \/><\/a>Jacksonville ranks fifth nationally for intersection crashes in a new decade-long study.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Analysts from the law firm looked at crash data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportation.gov\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">U.S. Department of Transportation<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.census.gov\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">U.S. Census Bureau<\/a> to compile its list. They analyzed intersection wrecks between 2014 and 2023 to order the list by the number of wrecks per 100,000 people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville recorded 414 intersection accidents during that period, for a per-capita rate of 2.4 crashes per 100,000 people. That accounts for an average of 41.4 wrecks annually.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jacksonville was outpaced by Albuquerque, New Mexico, which topped the list with 4.1 accidents per 100,000 people. One of the conversations around the team is the relative lack of big moves this offseason.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On defense, in particular, the Jaguars will look largely the same as they did last year with a few exceptions. Gone are starting linebacker Devin Lloyd and sometimes-starting safety Andrew Wingard. The Jaguars did not add any likely starters in free agency or the draft. Hunter is expected to play substantial snaps at cornerback for the Jaguars in 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Jaguars were the top rush defense in 2025 and ranked third in the NFL in expected points added per play, a metric that measures defensive situational efficiency. How can they be better?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Much of that comes down to the pass-rush.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Josh Hines-Allen led the team with eight sacks, with Arik Armstead contributing 5.5 and Travon Walker collecting 3.5 sacks. While sacks are not the only way to judge a defense\u2019s pass-rush, it is an area the Jaguars would like to see improved.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Walker played in 14 games, some of them while battling injury.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe were the number one rush defense last year for a reason. He was a huge part of that,\u201d said Jaguars\u2019 head coach Liam Coen. \u201cNow it\u2019s like, all right, we got to be able to stop the run at a high clip and rush the passer as well at a high clip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Walker spent time in the offseason grading his own game tape from last season. Now, the hope is that he will apply those lessons and return to being a double-digit sacker as he was in 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Despite the falloff in sacks last season, the Jaguars signed Walker to a four-year, $110 million contract extension with $77 million guaranteed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIt\u2019s been good being around the guys, being around the team, obviously being able to start to get back healthy,\u201d Walker said. \u201cI\u2019ve been on that journey ever since, probably like the middle of the season last year. It\u2019s definitely been a grind, but it\u2019s been great so far.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the season progressed, Walker was often pushed into pass-rush situations. Walker made the move without complaint.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m a team guy, so I want to be in any position wherever they put me to be able to help the team,\u201d Walker said. \u201cI feel like wherever they put me \u2026 on the line, no matter where it is, I feel I can dominate whatever position it is, so I just want to come and eat, practice, and work on whatever, wherever it is they put me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If Walker can return to form as a 10-sack contributor and Allen can do so in the second half of the season, when he picked up seven sacks in the last 10 weeks, the Jaguars\u2019 defense can be a strength of the team.
