The San Francisco 49ers entered the offseason facing questions about whether one of their most important offensive players would be ready for the start of the 2026 season. George Kittle’s latest update has provided a much more encouraging outlook.

According to ESPN’s Nick Wagoner, Kittle believes he remains on track to return for the 49ers’ Week 1 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams in Melbourne, Australia. The veteran tight end suffered a torn right Achilles tendon during San Francisco’s Wild Card loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Jan. 11 and underwent surgery shortly afterward.

The timeline makes the update notable. Kittle is only 19 weeks removed from surgery, yet he believes he can be available when the regular season begins. An Achilles injury is widely regarded as one of the toughest setbacks for NFL players, particularly for a position that depends on quick changes of direction, blocking strength and downfield speed.

George Kittle remains a key piece of San Francisco’s offense

Kittle’s return would be significant for a team expected to battle the Seahawks and Rams for control of the NFC West. San Francisco struggled with injuries throughout last season, and getting one of Brock Purdy’s most trusted targets back for Week 1 would remove a major question entering the year.

The 49ers have repeatedly emphasized the importance of staying healthy after injuries disrupted key stretches of last season. A successful return by Kittle would not only strengthen the passing attack but also boost the team’s run-blocking and overall offensive consistency.

Even while dealing with injuries in 2025, Kittle remained productive. He finished the season with 57 receptions for 628 yards and seven touchdowns, continuing to serve as a reliable option in the passing game. His ability to create mismatches against linebackers and safeties remains a central part of the 49ers’ offense.

San Francisco also enters the season with more offensive firepower. Mike Evans, Christian Kirk and De’Zhuan Stribling have joined a group that already includes Christian McCaffrey and Ricky Pearsall. That depth gives the 49ers multiple options, but Kittle’s presence changes the ceiling of the offense.

For now, the focus remains on his recovery. If Kittle reaches his goal and suits up against the Rams in Week 1, the 49ers will begin the season with one of their most important playmakers back in the lineup and a stronger chance of keeping pace in a highly competitive division.
