Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are once again entering a season with championship expectations, but one prediction has elevated the conversation surrounding the star quarterback even further. An NFL analyst recently projected that Mahomes will capture the third Most Valuable Player award of his career during the 2026 season, a forecast that underscores the confidence many continue to have in his ability to perform at an elite level.

Mahomes has already established himself as one of the defining players of his generation. Since becoming Kansas City’s starting quarterback, he has transformed the franchise into a perennial contender while accumulating accolades that place him among the most accomplished players of the modern era. His combination of arm talent, creativity and leadership has allowed the Chiefs to remain in championship contention year after year.

The MVP prediction comes despite questions surrounding Mahomes’ recovery from an injury that impacted the latter stages of the previous season. While any injury creates uncertainty, few players have demonstrated the ability to overcome adversity as consistently as Mahomes. Throughout his career, he has repeatedly shown an ability to elevate his performance when expectations are highest, making him a logical candidate for another standout campaign.

Kansas City enters the season with an offense that appears capable of supporting another MVP-caliber performance. The Chiefs continue to possess one of the league’s most respected coaching staffs and a collection of playmakers who can create opportunities throughout the field. The addition of new talent and the continued development of returning contributors could provide Mahomes with the support necessary to produce some of the best numbers of his career.

Mahomes is projected to bring his third MVP award home during the 2026 season. This is detailed in an analysis by Jason Reid for ESPN.

Patrick Mahomes will win his third MVP

Last season, the Chiefs missed the playoffs for the first time in Mahomes’ nine-year career, and he underwent surgery to repair torn ligaments in his left knee. No matter. The three-time Super Bowl winner will return with a vengeance. He’ll benefit from a formidable offensive line and a rushing attack led by Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III.

Winning a third MVP would place Mahomes in rare company and further strengthen an already impressive legacy. The award is often influenced not only by individual production but also by team success, meaning the Chiefs will likely need to remain among the AFC’s elite contenders. Given the expectations surrounding Kansas City, that objective appears well within reach if the roster performs as anticipated.

Predictions made before the season always carry an element of uncertainty, but Mahomes has earned the benefit of the doubt through years of excellence. The combination of talent, experience and organizational stability continues to make Kansas City one of the NFL’s most dangerous teams. If Mahomes delivers another dominant season while leading the Chiefs deep into the postseason race, a third MVP trophy could become a realistic outcome rather than a bold prediction.
