Rookie wide receiver Malachi Fields leaped and caught the bomb touchdown pass over top of corner Greg Newsome.

It was great to see them hit that downfield connection, even if it happened a bit out of structure during a minicamp practice without full contact.

But then Dart opened his next 11-on-11 drive with a floating duck up the middle of the field. Veteran receiver Darnell Mooney was wide open and waiting for the ball, but it never got there. Corner Paulson Adebo turned around, beelined and closed to intercept the fluttering ball.

This is largely how it has looked for the second-year quarterback so far: A little bit of good, but a lot more to iron out and work on.

Dart fumbled a shotgun snap on the goal line in a situational period later in the practice. Then he redeemed himself, again out of structure, by rolling right and lofting a jump ball to the right boundary of the end zone.

Isaiah Hodgins won the 50-50 ball over corner Deonte Banks for the touchdown. Dart also hit Calvin Austin for a solid gain later on.

Some of this is normal offseason work, especially for a quarterback learning a new offense. And granted wideouts Malik Nabers and Darius Slayton are still injured and rehabbing on the side. But training camp and the regular season will be here quickly.

Dart’s reliance on underneath throws for minimal completions, some inside throws into traffic and plenty of downfield misses — like an overthrow of Fields in one-on-one coverage against rookie corner Colton Hood — create plenty of reason for urgency from John Harbaugh and the Giants.

“I think he’s adjusting really well. He looks good,” Harbaugh said of Dart. “I love his competitiveness. He wants to be perfect every play. It’s a work in progress all the time. It’s still fairly early. But the clock is ticking.

“We started the team meeting off with [the song] ‘September’ by Earth, Wind & Fire,” he continued. “September is right around the corner. So that’s what we’re preparing for.”

One qualifier to the offense’s performance, of course, is that the playcalling will look a lot different when these become full contact practices.

Harbaugh and offensive coordinator Matt Nagy intend to run the ball. If they do that well and often, it should create more favorable looks and opportunities in the passing game.

All the same, it’d be nice to see Dart carve up the Giants’ secondary. A lot of this season’s promise hinges on whether the QB takes the next step.

SKATTEBO DOES A BIT MORE

Cam Skattebo did the most on-field work on Monday since breaking his right leg and ankle in late October of his rookie season.

Skattebo took handoffs with the running backs, then ran well to catch a wheel route on air from Dart during individual drills, then he caught some more passes as the Giants’ players built up their work to full team periods.

Skattebo went inside with a strength coach halfway through practice and ended his day, returning to the sideline to cheer on his teammates during the 11-on-11 periods. But it looked like another step toward him hopefully being ready for the start of the regular season.

PLENTY OF VISITORS

Former Bills head coach Sean McDermott walked onto the sideline at Monday’s Giants minicamp practice alongside Joe Schoen, a former colleague with the Buffalo Bills, and watched practice as a visitor. McDermott also worked in Philadelphia when Harbaugh was with the Eagles … Owner John Mara, who is battling cancer, came out to the field to watch the session. Harbaugh had Giants legends and Pro Football Hall of Famers Lawrence Taylor and Harry Carson speak to the Giants’ players after practice.

NO KNICKS TIX YET

Harbaugh was asked Monday if he ended up getting a ticket to Game 3 of the NBA Finals.

“I haven’t gotten any tickets yet. Tough ticket to get, man,” Harbaugh said smiling. “There’s a lot of celebrities, quote, unquote. Come on, really? In New York City? Let’s rank it out. Right? Let’s rank it out, man.

“I’m not expecting a phone call,” he added. “I will be watching on TV. I like that team. I just think they play as a team. I’m going to show the guys the video … about what the players are saying about why they’re where they’re at. You saw the video probably. It’s just a great mindset.”

TRY IT OUT

The Giants had three players open minicamp with them on a tryout basis: former Saints/Titans linebacker Anfernee Orji, journeyman defensive tackle Marlon Davidson and undrafted rookie fullback/defensive tackle Grant Finley. Finley, who played at Missouri Western, was a tryout at Giants rookie minicamp in early May and now is getting a second look with the full team in mid-June.

GET YOUR KICKS

Rookie Dominic Zvada seems to have a leg up in the Giants’ kicking competition. Zvada, a right-footed kicker out of Michigan, went a perfect 8-for-8 at Monday’s first minicamp practice in his first work with the media present. Lefty kicker Ben Sauls made only 4-of-8, continuing his struggles from spring OTAs.

The Giants cut veteran Jason Sanders prior to minicamp, leaving only Zvada and Sauls on the roster. Sauls, a 2025 Pittsburgh Steelers undrafted free agent, appeared in three games for the Giants last season. He made all eight of his field goals and all eight of his extra points. But unless he steadies his nerves, this looks like Zvada’s job to lose.

[2067
7,519,13,1917,56,2321,2469,6
post-914442","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-new-york-giants","tag-football","tag-giants","tag-jaxson-dart","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-giants","tag-newyork","tag-newyorkgiants","tag-nfl
["GET
