Matt Campbell and company then hosted five players for official visits on Friday, ending the week by securing a blue-chip defensive end commitment. While the week ended on a high note, the day after was grim as a 4-star wide receiver flipped.

Here’s a recap of Penn State’s recent up-and-down week in the recruiting department.

Commitments

Penn State appeared steady heading into the week after hosting a large group of both committed and uncommitted recruits during its first official visit weekend on June 5.

The Nittany Lions then went on a roll, securing two commitments on Monday and then a blue-chip defensive end on Sunday.

Each player filled a specific positional role that hadn’t been met yet. Long snapper Clayton Powell became the first special teams commitment in the class, safety Caleb Cooper became just the second safety on board and defensive end Elijah Guertin is Christian Smith’s first defensive end.

Additionally, Campbell expanded his geographical range to states that he hadn’t previously seen success from. Cooper hails from North Carolina, Guertin from Rhode Island and Powell from Louisiana, showcasing how this new staff continues to broaden their recruiting horizons.

Even better for Campbell, Guertin is the No. 1 player out of Rhode Island, so he’s been finding success in New England with Guertin and quarterback Will Wood while continuing to attack the northeast pipeline for the Class of 2028.

Like Wood in Massachusetts, Guertin is a private high school elite, having recently won the 2025 Rhode Island Division I state championship with Bishop Hendricken. At one point, he returned from a wrist injury wearing a cast before putting up 20 tackles and two sacks in five games.

Guertin’s commitment came quickly after his official visit to Happy Valley on Friday, but Campbell will still have to fend off Tennessee, which has an official visit with Guertin planned for this Friday.

Players flipped

Penn State lost a pair of 3-star cornerbacks and a 4-star wide receiver that flipped to schools outside of the Big Ten.

Semajay Robinson was Matt Campbell’s first commit in the 2027 class. He was brought in by Terry Smith on March 28, and it appeared as though he was fully locked in with the Nittany Lions after his official visit on June 5.

Robinson had also been extremely active on social media platforms such as X and Instagram, making an effort to draw in more recruits to Happy Valley.

That was until Robinson removed all traces of Penn State from his social media accounts on Tuesday morning. Later that day, he announced that he’d flipped to Virginia, becoming the Cavaliers’ highest-ranked commit in the class.

Zachary Gleason Jr. followed the same trend two days later, but he headed next door to West Virginia to become the Mountaineers’ only cornerback commit.

He had also been recruited by Smith and originally committed to Penn State on March 31, just three days after Robinson. With Robinson and Gleason Jr. out the door, Smith has two cornerbacks remaining in the class.

Associate head coach and cornerbacks coach Terry Smith smiles during a press conference in Beaver Stadium on Wednesday, Feb. 4, 2026 in University Park, Pa.

                                    Matt Cropp

Jamir Dean was the third flip in seven days. He committed to Penn State on May 1, but that only caught Georgia’s attention, as the Bulldogs made Dean an offer five days later and continued to push for him despite his social media presence repping the blue and white.

Dean made his way out to Athens for an official visit on May 29 before heading to State College for the June 5 visit, a weekend that seemingly went well. However, Dean couldn’t resist Georgia and flipped on Monday.

Now, the Nittany Lions have only one receiver commit in 4-star Landon Blum, but have their sights set on top prospects Khalil Taylor and DeShawn Hall to replenish Kashif Moore’s ranks.

Uncommitted visitors

Three of the five visitors on Friday have yet to commit, and all three are currently rated 3-star recruits.

Dhillon McGee may be able to replenish Smith’s cornerback room. He’s the No. 67 player out of Texas and No. 48 cornerback in the Class of 2027, and Penn State is the only northern school still in the mix.

McGee’s being hunted by in-state schools Texas and SMU, and he has an official visit to the Longhorns planned for Friday.

Offensive tackles Lucas Rhoa and Oscar Webersink were also in town this weekend. Rhoa is the No. 47 player out of California and the No. 54 offensive tackle, while Webersink is the No. 3 player from Connecticut and No. 75 offensive tackle.

Rhoa is notably joining McGee at Texas on Friday, and Webersink has Florida State and Maryland on his trail despite no official visits set up with them.

Rhoa and Webersink — if both choose Penn State — add depth and potential for competition in the room.

Class of 2028 quarterback news

Penn State hosted a prospect camp starting on Wednesday, where a few notable quarterbacks were in attendance.

Headlining the camp was 4-star quarterback James Armstrong. The in-state prospect is the No. 4 player out of Pennsylvania and No. 10 quarterback in the 2028 class, receiving an offer from Penn State in late March.

Armstrong made an unofficial visit out to State College last September as well, the only one recorded per 247Sports.

Quarterbacks coach Jake Waters also worked closely with fellow 4-star quarterback Trey Tagliaferri, who’s the No. 9 player out of New Jersey and No. 14 quarterback in the class.

MORE FOOTBALL COVERAGE

Another commit has flipped away from Penn State.

If you’re interested in submitting a Letter to the Editor, click here.

Submit

It was an interesting week for Penn State’s recruiting efforts in the Class of 2027.
