JULY 3: The \u201cup to\u201d in that initial contract report did plenty of work. The base value for the Strange deal is $36MM, according to OverTheCap<\/a>. Jacksonville authorized $17MM guaranteed at signing.<\/p>\n

Illustrating the tight end market\u2019s glacial climb in the modern NFL, Strange\u2019s $12MM AAV is tied for 11th at the position \u2014 one that still does not have a $20MM-per-year player. Excluding rookie contracts, Strange\u2019s at-signing guarantee is tied for 10th among TEs. This contract comes in south of where the Jags went for Engram on a 2023 extension, but Strange\u2019s resume does not yet match his predecessor\u2019s. Though, the former second-round pick is only 25 and should have upside entering his prime.<\/p>\n

JUNE 24: The Jaguars are keeping tight end Brenton Strange<\/a> around for the foreseeable future. Strange has agreed to a three-year extension worth up to $48MM, Mike Garafolo of NFL Network<\/a> reports. The deal includes $25MM in guaranteed money.<\/p>\n

After joining the Jaguars as a second-round pick in 2023, Strange made little impact as a rookie. Stuck behind Evan Engram<\/a> and Luke Farrell<\/a> on the depth chart, the Penn State product finished with just five catches, 35 yards and a touchdown in 14 games. Engram and Farrell returned in 2024, but the former missed eight games with injuries. That led to a much bigger role for Strange, who played a full 17-game season and racked up 40 receptions, 411 yards and a pair of touchdowns.<\/p>\n

Strange had the starting job to himself last year after the Jaguars released Engram and let Farrell walk in free agency. Although Strange missed five games with a hip injury, he set across-the-board career highs. The 6-foot-4, 253-pounder hauled in 46 balls for 540 yards and three TDs in 12 games. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence<\/a>, who finished fifth in the MVP race, posted a stellar 120.1 passer rating when he targeted Strange.<\/p>\n

When Strange was in the lineup in 2025, the AFC South-winning Jaguars went 11-1 and averaged 30.1 points per game (per Michael DiRocco of ESPN)<\/a>. When he was out, they lost three of five and put up 22.6 points per game. It is clear he was a huge part of the unit\u2019s success under what was then a rookie head coach-offensive coordinator duo of Liam Coen and Grant Udinski. Strange\u2019s lucrative extension suggests he will continue to play a major role in the Jaguars\u2019 offense for the next few years. The 25-year-old now ranks fifth at his position in average annual value ($16MM), eighth in total money ($48MM) and 10th in guarantees.<\/p>\n

Now that Jaguars general manager James Gladstone has locked up his top tight end, he could turn his attention to an extension for wide receiver Parker Washington<\/a>. Gladstone was discussing contracts<\/a> with Strange, edge defender Travon Walker<\/a> and Washington in early April. He has since hammered out deals with Strange and Walker, leaving Washington as the lone member of the trio without long-term security.<\/p>\n

Strange became the second tight end of the week to agree to a big-money extension, following the Falcons\u2019 Kyle Pitts<\/a> (three years, $54MM<\/a>).
