Something has to give.

That gap between expectation and ranking is the key story heading into the season, and ESPN’s comprehensive breakdown of all 32 NFL starting lineups, published Monday, shows exactly where the 49ers must prove the analysts wrong.

Here are the teams ranked higher than San Francisco:

1. Los Angeles Rams
2. Philadelphia Eagles
3. Seattle Seahawks
4. Buffalo Bills
5. Baltimore Ravens
6. Detroit Lions
7. New England Patriots
8. Denver Broncos
9. Houston Texans
10. Green Bay Packers

The good news starts at the most important position on the field. ESPN’s Mike Clay ranked quarterback as the 49ers’ biggest strength — and backed it up with numbers that are hard to argue with.

“Brock Purdy’s continued strong play, coupled with Mac Jones’ solid performance in relief duty last season, is enough to push quarterback to the top,” Clay wrote. “Durability has been an issue for Purdy, but his efficiency has been elite — he has finished his three seasons as a starter ranked first, seventh and, most recently, second in QBR [total quarterback rating]. He threw 20 TDs in only nine games last season – a pace matched only by Matthew Stafford.”

Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265 million extension in 2025, is the centerpiece of everything coach Kyle Shanahan wants to build. But a franchise quarterback only can do so much if the team around him has holes, and ESPN identified one that Red and Gold fans already know about.

The interior defensive line remains the 49ers’ biggest weakness, according to Clay. The numbers from last season are brutal — the 49ers finished 31st in pressures with 157 and dead last in sacks with just 20. The addition of Osa Odighizuwa from Dallas brings experience, and second-year players Alfred Collins and C.J. West have nowhere to go but up after both ranked among the league’s worst-graded defensive tackles last season. But this is a group that needs to prove itself, not one that gets the benefit of the doubt.

The X factor, according to ESPN analyst Eric Walder, is wide receiver Mike Evans — and the stakes in both directions are significant.

“It would be foolish to pretend there isn’t risk,” Walder wrote. “Evans will be 33 before the season starts, he played in only eight games in 2025, and his open score dropped to a below-average 46. He scored a 91 the prior season.”

If Evans is healthy and productive, the 49ers’ offense becomes significantly harder to defend. If he is not, the 49ers will be leaning heavily on Ricky Pearsall, coming off his own injury-shortened season, Christian Kirk and second-round rookie De’Zhaun Stribling.

Stribling is worth watching closely, according to ESPN’s Aaron Schatz, who noted that the 49ers’ offense used to dominate the league in yards after the catch but finished last season near the bottom of the league in that category. The Ole Miss product could be the answer to that problem out of the slot.

Eleventh out of 32. For a franchise that has reached two Super Bowls in the last six seasons, that ranking will sting. But this organization never has minded being underestimated — and John Lynch never has been shy about making a move mid-season when he believes the roster is ready.

Whether the 49ers are a finished product or a work in progress, the answer will come quickly once September arrives.

Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast

The 49ers want a sixth Super Bowl win, yet ESPN sees the 11th-best roster in the NFL.
