Every year, Athlon Sports releases college football season previews for every major team in the sport. As part of those previews, they allow other coaches from the same conference to comment on the team that is being previewed. These coaches remain anonymous which allows them to speak more freely.<\/p>\n
During their preview of Rutgers, four anonymous Big Ten coaches spoke their minds about what type of team they think Rutgers will be next season, and the progress of Head Coach Greg Schiano\u2019s rebuild overall.<\/p>\n

Anonymous B1G Coach No. 1: \u201dThe quarterback returning is big; that offensive system showed some promise last year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Anonymous B1G Coach No. 2: \u201cI think they\u2019re a stable program now, but it\u2019s hard to predict they\u2019ll make that next step up because a lot of the key position group needs are being filled by portal guys. There isn\u2019t a culture issue we know of; I think it\u2019s just a case of the have-nots, and guys are getting bigger offers to go other places.\u201d<\/p>\n
Anonymous B1G Coach No. 3: \u201cThey\u2019re really high on some of the young receivers, and in Kirk Ciarrocca\u2019s system, they could break out this year.\u201d<\/p>\n
Anonymous B1G Coach No. 4: \u201cOverall, they\u2019re probably on par with the last few seasons. This is a very smart, capable coaching staff. It\u2019s going to take a different approach in personnel for them to build the depth and talent level necessary to win more games in this league.\u201d<\/p>\n

From these quotes, it seems like Rutgers has earned the same amount of respect that a middle-tier Big Ten team receives. However, it also seems like there is some serious questioning as to whether or not Rutgers is going to take a step above that, especially when considering what coaches two and four said. While it is true that Rutgers does need to get their hands on higher-end talent to move up, their coaching staff also does a good job of maximizing the talent they do have. A few more seasons of doing just that should allow them to start reaching for better talent.<\/p>\n
