Two front-runner groups have emerged in the bidding process to purchase the Seattle Seahawks. One group includes Boston Celtics minority owner Aditya Mittal and former Celtics governor Wyc Grousbeck, while the other is led by San Francisco 49ers minority investor Vinod Khosla.<\/p>\n
Three sources familiar with the matter told the outlet that at least one former Seahawks player is involved with one of the two groups. The player’s identity was not disclosed, and it remains unclear which group they have joined.<\/p>\n
One source indicated only these two groups remain in contention. Another source cautioned that a new bidder could still surface late in the process, pointing to Steve Ballmer’s surprise $2 billion offer for the Los Angeles Clippers in 2014 as precedent.<\/p>\n
Canadian billionaire Steve Apostolopoulos withdrew from consideration, a source said. Todd Boehly, who co-owns the Dodgers, Lakers and Chelsea FC, is also no longer in the running. At least one additional unidentified bidder submitted an offer and was informed they had been eliminated.<\/p>\n
Khosla’s family would need to sell its existing minority stake in the 49ers if the bid succeeds. Forbes estimates Khosla’s net worth at nearly $14 billion, while the Grousbeck family’s net worth sits around $2.2 billion and the Mittal family’s tops $17 billion.<\/p>\n
A representative for the Paul G. Allen Estate, the team’s seller, said there was no update to share on the sale process. Representatives for Allen & Co., Latham & Watkins and the NFL all declined to comment.<\/p>\n
Industry experts project the sale could fetch between $8 billion and $10 billion, which would surpass the $6.05 billion record set by the Washington Commanders’ 2023 sale.<\/p>\n
“I wouldn’t be surprised if they hit something like $9.5 billion,” said Irwin Kishner, co-chair of the sports law group at Herrick Feinstein.<\/p>\n
