By the end of his career, and likely by the end of this season, Chris Boswell will hold all the significant Pittsburgh Steelers\u2019 kicking records. He\u2019s 11 field goals away<\/a> from surpassing Gary Anderson\u2019s mark for most in a career. Another 94 points will set the scoring record, too. He already holds records for most 50-yarders and most field goals in a season, and shares the top mark for the most field goals in a game (his six are tied with Jeff Reed). He currently trails Shaun Suisham for career field goal percentage, but it\u2019s a razor-thin margin (87.9 versus 87.7), and it wouldn\u2019t be surprising if Boswell ends up on top.<\/p>\n

Fresh off a contract extension,<\/a> Boswell won\u2019t just rewrite the record books, but is on pace to reset them.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s doubtful he\u2019ll end his career with every record, though. One is particularly elusive: Anderson doesn\u2019t even hold it. The franchise record for most single-season extra points was set long ago, and isn\u2019t under threat to be broken.<\/p>\n

Matt Bahr set the record nearly 50 years ago. In 1979, at the peak of Pittsburgh\u2019s offense during the 70s dynasty, and with the NFL moving to a 16-game schedule, Bahr hit 50 extra points as the Steelers wrapped the decade with their fourth Lombardi.<\/p>\n

To date, Boswell hasn\u2019t come close. His single-season high is 43, set back in 2018. That doesn\u2019t put him on the leaderboard.<\/p>\n

Last year, Boswell hit 42 of them, with his final one partially blocked and drifting wide, nearly dooming the season. Jumping to 51, which would tie the record, is asking a lot. It would require Pittsburgh\u2019s offense to become far more potent than it currently is, even knowing the unit could improve this season.<\/p>\n

In that \u201979 season, Pittsburgh ranked first in scoring. The team posted 416 points, still tied for fourth-most in franchise history. The Steelers found the end zone 52 times. By contrast, Pittsburgh, despite an extra game, scored 45 touchdowns in 2025.<\/p>\n

It might be years before Pittsburgh finds its next franchise quarterback and develops an offense capable of top-five output. It\u2019s more likely the group will rely on Boswell for field goals when drives stall out short of the goal line.<\/p>\n

Unlike Bahr\u2019s days, extra points aren\u2019t as close. They\u2019re still near-automatic, but Boswell\u2019s had at least one miss in four of the five years he\u2019s attempted more than 35 extra points. When 51 is the number to beat, there\u2019s no room for error.<\/p>\n

Boswell\u2019s best chance to set the record could come through an 18-game season. It\u2019s uncertain when that\u2019ll happen. The NFL hasn\u2019t made the aggressive push they seemed poised to do to lengthen the season. Roger Goodell cited NFLPA leadership disarray as a key reason why. It might not happen until the new CBA is negotiated for the 2031 season. Boswell will be 40 five years from now, and his career could be at its tail end.<\/p>\n

Holding the career extra point record is far more achievable. He needs another 64 to beat Anderson, and assuming good health, Boswell should do that by the end of 2027. Breaking the season-best mark, while not impossible, is a lot less likely. Doing so means great news for the future of the Pittsburgh Steelers\u2019 offense.
