Cam Ward wasn\u2019t always a film junkie. The Tennessee Titans quarterback has spoken openly about the fact that he didn\u2019t really play the position in a traditional sense until college. Ward was a wing-T running quarterback throughout high school, then went to Incarnate Word as a zero-star recruit and played in a gimmicky collegiate system before transferring to Washington State, where he started to air the ball out and develop as a legitimate passer. His final college season at Miami represented his first real taste of big-time, pro-style football. That\u2019s a small sample size compared to other NFL quarterbacks when it comes to grinding film, studying opposing defenses, and emulating the greats.<\/p>\n
That context makes Ward\u2019s Mount Rushmore of NFL quarterbacks all the more revealing.<\/p>\n
At Fanatics Fest in New York City this week, Ward sat down with the Debo and Joe Show for a live interview covering a range of topics, including his four-man quarterback Mount Rushmore. Here\u2019s who made the cut: Tom Brady, Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Michael Vick.<\/p>\n
What the list tells us about Ward\u2019s game<\/p>\n
No Peyton Manning. No Joe Montana. No mention of the older legends. The oldest name on the list is Favre, which perhaps shows Ward\u2019s youth more than anything else. But Brady is on there, which is the one non-negotiable checkbox, and Ward checked it.<\/p>\n
I could have wagered my entire mortgage on Aaron Rodgers making this list. For starters, I\u2019d personally have Rodgers on my own Mount Rushmore. But more to the point, Ward has that Rodgers streak in him as a gunslinger. He also carries some of that Favre DNA. The through-line between both Green Bay Packers legends and Ward is clear: be strong in the pocket, use your legs to buy time, and remain a downfield passer first. Ward doesn\u2019t take off and run as a primary weapon. He extends plays and creates throwing windows with his mobility, much like Rodgers has done throughout his career. That\u2019s the closest stylistic match to Ward on this entire list. It\u2019s not a 1-to-1 comp by any means, but from an athleticism standpoint, an arm strength standpoint, and a play style standpoint, Rodgers is the blueprint Ward appears to be chasing.<\/p>\n
Brady\u2019s inclusion speaks to a different dimension. From a mental processing standpoint and a pocket passing standpoint, I believe Ward tries to model his game after Brady as best he can. The cerebral side, the anticipation, the ability to dissect a defense pre-snap. That\u2019s the Brady influence.<\/p>\n
The Michael Vick factor<\/p>\n
Vick\u2019s presence on the list is where things get particularly fun for Titans fans. For somebody in Ward\u2019s generation (myself included), Vick\u2019s style of play resonated deeply during our formative sports years. I completely understand why Ward gravitated toward Vick\u2019s game as a young person.<\/p>\n
Ward has described himself as a non-runner and a lesser quarterback athlete, but that doesn\u2019t mean he can\u2019t win with his legs. He only started to scratch the surface of that dimension toward the end of his rookie season. Under Brian Daboll, a coach known for pushing his quarterbacks to use their legs more strategically, perhaps Ward leans into that Vick element he believes he can channel. There\u2019s additional value for the Titans offense if Ward creates more with his mobility in year two, and having Vick on his Mount Rushmore suggests he\u2019s at least open to that evolution.<\/p>\n
The bigger picture<\/p>\n
Ward also recently said he thinks Kobe Bryant is the greatest basketball player of all time, bypassing the LeBron-versus-MJ debate entirely. That tells you something about how he thinks. He\u2019s drawn to competitors with a specific edge and style rather than defaulting to consensus picks. A couple of eclectic names on his quarterback Mount Rushmore fit that pattern perfectly.<\/p>\n
Ward\u2019s list offers a window into the kind of quarterback he wants to become: a Brady-level processor with Rodgers-like playmaking ability, Favre\u2019s gunslinger mentality, and just enough Vick to keep defenses honest with his legs. If he can pull from each of those players even a little, Tennessee will be in good shape.<\/p>\n
