The New York Giants face a significant decision with edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux this season. The former fifth overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft is playing on his fifth-year option worth $14.75 million, and his future in New York remains uncertain. The Athletic\u2019s Dan Duggan<\/a> identified Thibodeaux as the Giants player with the most on the line<\/a> in 2026, and there are valid reasons to agree with that assessment.<\/p>\n

Thibodeaux\u2019s complicated role<\/p>\n

Thibodeaux had a strong 2023 season with 11.5 sacks, but his role diminished after the Giants traded for Brian Burns in 2024 and drafted Abdul Carter in 2025. He is now the third edge defender on the roster. That\u2019s a steep drop for a player selected in the top five just four years ago.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Giants listened to trade calls on Thibodeaux<\/a> this offseason, but elected to keep the No. 5 pick from the 2022 draft when the offers were underwhelming. Thibodeaux was available because the Giants traded for Brian Burns in 2024 and drafted Abdul Carter in 2025. Thibodeaux is set to earn $14.75 million on his fifth-year option as a backup. Though he won\u2019t start, Thibodeaux will have opportunities to rush the passer. If he produces an 11.5-sack season like he did in 2023, a monster payday awaits. If he struggles in a reduced role, he could be headed for a prove-it deal in free agency.\u201d \u2014 Dan Duggan<\/p>\n

The financial question<\/p>\n

According to Spotrac, Thibodeaux is projected to command a four-year, $85 million contract ($21.3 million per year) on the open market. That projection assumes strong production, and paying that much for a rotational edge rusher would be difficult to justify when the Giants already have Burns and Carter.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s why the situation creates an interesting crossroads for the Giants\u2019 front office. The Giants are not necessarily expected to compete in 2026, so keeping Thibodeaux for the full season only to lose him for nothing next offseason would be an underwhelming outcome. He could generate a compensatory pick two years from now, but that depends on how free agency plays out for both Thibodeaux and New York. There is no guarantee the math works in the Giants\u2019 favor.<\/p>\n

Trading Thibodeaux ahead of the regular season or before the trade deadline<\/a> would allow the team to recoup draft capital for a talented player in a complicated situation. The Giants explored that route this offseason but found the offers lacking.<\/p>\n

Thibodeaux generated 40 and 43 pressures in each of his first two NFL seasons, showing the pass-rush ability that made him a top-five pick. But the numbers have trended downward with a reduced role. In 2024, he posted 38 pressures. Last season, that number dropped to 32.<\/p>\n

Why Thibodeaux is still valuable in the NFL world<\/p>\n

There is a silver lining, though. Thibodeaux established himself as a run defender last season, earning the best PFF run defense grade of his career at 80.7. That type of versatility carries value on the open market, even if it doesn\u2019t match the pass-rush ceiling teams expected when he entered the league.<\/p>\n

At 25 years old, Thibodeaux still has youth on his side. The talent is real, and the track record of production exists. The question is whether a reduced role in New York will allow him to showcase enough to justify a significant contract, or whether the Giants should move him while he still carries trade value. For Thibodeaux and the Giants alike, the 2026 season will answer a lot of questions about what comes next.<\/p>\n
