The Cincinnati Bengals have done a remarkable job of celebrating the franchise\u2019s history since launching the Ring of Honor in 2021.<\/p>\n
Now, with another loaded ballot and a growing list of deserving candidates, one of the organization\u2019s all-time greats believes the process is becoming almost impossible.<\/p>\n
Former Bengals offensive tackle Willie Anderson recently discussed the evolution of the Ring of Honor, sharing his thoughts on what the recognition has meant to him and why future voting decisions will only become more difficult.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t put everybody in\u201d<\/p>\n
In putting some thoughts on the team\u2019s recent ceremony to honor their past greats, Anderson acknowledged the difficult position fans now find themselves in each summer.<\/p>\n
With modern stars such as Geno Atkins, Andrew Whitworth, A.J. Green, Carlos Dunlap and Leon Hall joining an already stacked group of former Bengals legends on the ballot, every vote inevitably leaves worthy candidates on the outside looking in.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s exactly what Anderson expected.<\/p>\n
The Bengals have quietly built one of the NFL\u2019s deepest collections of franchise legends. While the organization spent years without formally recognizing many of its greats, the Ring of Honor has helped bridge generations of Bengals football\u2014from the Riverfront Stadium era all the way to today\u2019s contenders.<\/p>\n
The honor hits differently<\/p>\n
For Anderson, being inducted into the Bengals Ring of Honor in 2022 remains one of the defining moments of his football career.<\/p>\n
Despite earning four Pro Bowl selections, three First-Team All-Pro honors and continued Hall of Fame consideration, Anderson emphasized that being celebrated by the organization and fan base carried unique meaning. It\u2019s a recognition that comes directly from the people who watched those careers unfold every Sunday.<\/p>\n
That perspective helps explain why Anderson understands how emotional the annual vote has become.<\/p>\n
Unlike league-wide awards or Hall of Fame voting, the Bengals Ring of Honor represents something deeply personal between the franchise and its supporters.<\/p>\n
This year\u2019s vote showed exactly how difficult it\u2019s becoming<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, the Bengals announced that Bob Trumpy and James Brooks earned induction into the 2026 Ring of Honor after voting by season ticket members. They will officially be honored during halftime of Cincinnati\u2019s Nov. 1 home game against the Tennessee Titans.<\/p>\n
Both players were unquestionably deserving.<\/p>\n
Trumpy remains arguably the greatest tight end in franchise history, while Brooks is one of the most explosive offensive players the Bengals have ever fielded.<\/p>\n
Yet even after those two names came off the board, several all-time Bengals remain waiting. The major issue with the club\u2019s reluctance to put out a Ring of Honor for so many years is a logjam of deserving players having to bide their time long after their great careers ended. It has quietly forced the team to add multiple players per year (ranging from two to four, depending on the year), dimming the exclusivity aspect of a team Hall of Fame.<\/p>\n
In the unfortunate cases with Trumpy, Paul Brown and Ken Riley, their inductions were posthumous. Had the team engaged in this great endeavor earlier on, at least some of these great Bengals figures would have been able to be present to see their careers come full circle.<\/p>\n
And, while there are many more deserving names waiting, the franchise recently announced that beginning in 2027, only one individual will be inducted each year instead of two, making future ballots even more competitive. That appears to be the qualm Anderson has with the process.<\/p>\n
For much of the Bengals\u2019 early history, conversations centered around why so many franchise legends weren\u2019t receiving enough recognition.<\/p>\n
Today, the discussion has shifted\u2014even with the issues of a late start to a Ring of Honor.<\/p>\n
Instead of wondering whether the Bengals have enough worthy candidates, fans are debating which deserving legend should go first.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s a testament to both the organization\u2019s rich history and the success of the Ring of Honor itself.<\/p>\n
