(WBTV) &#8211; A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/07\/16\/charlotte-native-panthers-quarterback-retires-nfl-31\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/07\/16\/charlotte-native-panthers-quarterback-retires-nfl-31\/\">Charlotte native and recently retired NFL quarterback<\/a> will make his return to football, but this time as a coach. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Former Carolina Panthers quarterback Will Grier has joined the Dallas Cowboys as an offensive assistant, the team announced on Friday, July 24. He <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/21\/quarterback-charlotte-signs-with-hometown-panthers\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.wbtv.com\/2026\/04\/21\/quarterback-charlotte-signs-with-hometown-panthers\/\">resigned with his hometown team<\/a> in April ahead of the 2026 NFL Draft. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He played high school football at nearby Davidson Day School and threw for 195 touchdowns in 38 games. Grier signed with the University of Florida as a four-star quarterback in 2014. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">In 2016, the Charlotte native transferred to West Virginia and after sitting out a year he threw for 7,354 yards and 71 touchdowns while completing 65.7% of his passes. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Grier was drafted by his hometown Panthers in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft. He made his only two NFL starts during his rookie season in 2019. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">He was then cut in 2021 by the Panthers after they traded for former New York Jets quarterback Sam Darnold. <\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">Grier then bounced around from the Dallas Cowboys, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Los Angeles Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles in the years since. He mostly served on the practice squad or as a backup quarterback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text | article-text\">The Eagles gave him a Super Bowl ring following Philadelphia\u2019s Super Bowl LIX win.<\/p>\n<p>Copyright 2026 WBTV.
