State of the Saints: How is the offense looking this year?<\/p>\n
Tyler Shough is entering his first full year as the starting quarterback for the Saints. <\/p>\n
Last season, he started the final nine games, finishing with a 5-4 record. <\/p>\n
Shough spent his offseason embracing the city of New Orleans. He even traveled to Paris as the face of the franchise to promote the first-ever NFL regular season game in France.<\/p>\n
The Saints drafted three receivers and a tight end to help beef up the productivity on the offense. <\/p>\n
After a contentious back-and-forth over contracts, Alvin Kamara and the team settled their differences and restructured the all-time leading rusher in Saints’ history before training camp. <\/p>\n
Life should be much easier for Kamara with the addition of Travis Etienne. He comes over from the Jaguars, where he rushed for 1,000 yards in three different seasons. <\/p>\n
For Shough and the offense to be successful, they need to have a healthy offensive lineman. <\/p>\n
They already have their cornerstones at left and right tackle with Kelvin Banks and Taliese Fuaga. They also added their biggest acquisition along the offensive line with left guard David Edwards. <\/p>\n
The biggest key to the offensive line is center Erik McCoy, who has been plagued by injuries the last two seasons. <\/p>\n
How is the defense looking this year?<\/p>\n
The defense is entering its second year under the helm of defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. <\/p>\n
The Saints have a lot of young and up-and-coming talent on defense. <\/p>\n
At cornerback, there are a lot of eyes on Kool-Aid McKinstry and Quincy Riley.<\/p>\n
Even more eyes will be on safety Jonas Sanker, and that’s because he is moving into the very important role left behind by Alontae Taylor. <\/p>\n
With Sanker moving to the star position, Julian Blackmon will have to fill in at strong safety. He was hurt in the season opener last year. <\/p>\n
The good news is they still have veteran safety Justin Reid to help the secondary. <\/p>\n
As for the defensive line, veteran Cam Jordan is returning for his 16th and what may be his final season in the NFL. <\/p>\n
Last season, he led the team with 10.5 sacks. <\/p>\n
The Saints’ defensive line should be even better with defensive end Chase Young continuing to show strides after finishing with a career-high 10 sacks in 2025. <\/p>\n
They also have young veterans in Bryan Bresee and Carl Granderson. <\/p>\n
Another beloved veteran, Demario Davis, left for the New York Jets. To replace him, the Saints brought back a familiar face in Kaden Elliss. <\/p>\n
The linebacker room also has Pete Werner, Danny Stutsman, and Isaiah Stalbird.<\/p>\n
Fan-favorite bids goodbye to Big Easy:<\/p>\n
The biggest headline out of the offseason was the loss of Swiss Army Knife Taysom Hill.<\/p>\n
Hill, who treated the post-season press conferences as an unofficial goodbye, did not make a formal announcement of his departure. <\/p>\n
The news came out when general manager Mickey Loomis stated that no contract was offered. <\/p>\n
Hill was with the Saints for nine seasons and at this time remains unsigned. <\/p>\n
What to watch for this season: <\/p>\n
The team overall has struggled to hit its stride with a quarterback since Drew Brees retired after the 2020 season. <\/p>\n
Shough laid the foundation for a solid chance to be the future of the franchise last season.<\/p>\n
The Saints signed and drafted multiple players on offense to help make that transition easier. <\/p>\n
The biggest player drafted in that effort was receiver Jordyn Tyson. <\/p>\n
He practiced for rookie minicamp, but then after that, Kellen Moore and the staff pulled the reins back a little bit and decided to ease him into everything due to multiple college injuries. <\/p>\n
When healthy, Tyson could be one of the breakout players from the 2026 NFL draft. <\/p>\n
Saints’ preseason schedule:<\/p>\n
The Saints will play three preseason games. One game will be away, and two will be at home.<\/p>\n
Here is the schedule breakdown:<\/p>\n
Saints vs. Jacksonville Jaguars, Aug. 15, at 3 p.m.Saints at Los Angeles Rams, Aug. 22, at 3 p.m. Saints at Dallas Cowboys, Aug. 28, at 7 p.m. Saints’ regular-season schedule:<\/p>\n
The Saints will start the season on the road for the first time since the 2022 season.<\/p>\n
The season kicks off with tough back-to-back road games, followed by three straight home games.<\/p>\n
One of the biggest faux pas in the schedule is the missed opportunity to honor the Rebirth Rival game 20 years after Hurricane Katrina.<\/p>\n
The Saints vs. Falcons game is happening a week later after the 20-year anniversary of the infamous “Domecoming” game.<\/p>\n
The Saints will face two familiar faces in back-to-back road games, meeting former head coach Dennis Allen for the second straight year in Chicago.<\/p>\n
A week later, LSU legends Joe Burrow and Ja’Marr Chase will face the Black and Gold on their turf in Ohio.<\/p>\n
The Saints close out the season with four of their last five games facing NFC South opponents.<\/p>\n
The Saints have the second-easiest schedule in the NFL. The team will face five teams that made the playoffs last year, which is the fewest in the NFL<\/p>\n
